Australians - Where are you all????

Hi all ...

Re my little Aussie Araucana Mindy. Just wanted to know if anyone has EVER heard a hen ( and she is certainly a hen ) CROW like a rooster before she gets into panic mode to lay. The neighbours have heard it, and so has my husband. He just shakes his head in disbelief.
hmm.png

Admittedly, it is not a loud crowing like a rooster does, but it is most certainly the sound of a rooster. Sometimes it's the full on Ah-a-ah-a-aaaaah ( apologies for the attempt at writing a roo call ) ...
lol.png
and at times she cuts it off in the middle. After a while of this gutteral calling, she pants, gets a bit frantic, starts 'purring' with that soft chuckly sound they do when about to lay .... and finally lays, a beautiful blue or greenish coloured egg.

I am quite astonished at all this - and so are all who have heard her. But then, I am relatively new to having chooks, so .... can anyone shed light on this please ?

Also, cracked open an egg the other day ( from Mandy Welsummer ), and found a nicely formed foetus - or at least it certainly looked like that. On inspecting it - it was approx. 7 mm long, and looked like a tiny bean. I separated it, and it seemed fleshy ?? We do not have a roo, and are not planning to get one. Can a chicken lay an egg that is already showing something that looks fertilised - while waiting for it to BE fertilised. ?

I look forward with interest to any info. anyone has on these two weird queries.

Cheers ......... AB

Hi

My younger cosin had three hens as her pets.
She Had one hen the crowed like a rooster.

But she was defiantly getting three eggs a day as the three hens layed all different coloured eggs.

When she told me, i didnt know whether to believe her or not. Also the hen had Araucana blood in it as it layed green eggs.

But as she lived in the city, she had to end up getting rid of the hen as it crowed early in the morning.

Cheers

Hope this backs you up

Hi, I have heard that it is an Araucana trait although I can't remember the ones we had when I was a kid doing it. I think someone was discussing it on this thread a few months ago. A bit like the Barneys have a different sound but more so.

As far as your egg issue goes sometimes eggs have "lumpy bits". I'd say it would just be normal tissue as biologically it can't be foetal material if not fertilised by a rooster. You didn't say where or what colour it was so it's hard to say. Was it in the white - Albumin? If not fertilised there is a little faint spot on the yolk. When fertilised it changes to a little bullseye. Did you take a photo? You can always search the threads in "behaviours and egg laying". There is a lot of freaky eggs there and people who really know their stuff to talk about it.

Post a pic if you have one.

One of my girls gave me an odd coloured egg shell the other day. I'll post a pic later.

Cheers

Thanks MyHaven .... that answers both my questions. Mindy, being an Araucana, I can now explain to the disbelievers that the breed do have a tendency to crow like a rooster. How odd that is.

Re the egg. The little thing was sitting on the yolk at the side, and most probably was in the albumin as it was rather difficult to separate out. It looked exactly like a tiny borlotti bean, which are pinkish with brown spots / splashes - ( these beans are delicious and I use them in soups and as an added vegie to our meals ). Anyway, when I was able to open this tiny thing - it seemed fleshy and was pinkish inside it - ( using a magnifying glass ). I didn't think of taking a photo at the time. I have found small reddish spots on yolks before, photos of which I do have ( if I can find them ) .... but this was nothing like that. I will look up the thread you suggested. Might find something that looks like it there ... and if so, will let you know which page etc.

Learning about chooks is absolutely fascinating. They are capable of darned near anything - and will constantly surprise. Wld like to see also, the photo you have of your odd coloured egg one of your hens laid.

Meantime - have a great weekend.

Cheers .......... AB.

Hi Anniebee,

I have a Belgian D'Uccle hen that crows on occasion. When I first heard it I only had 2 pullets and at first I thought one might be a rooster but once they both started to lay, (2 different sized & shade eggs on the same day) I knew I had a crowing hen. It's not a regular thing so no real issue in my area.

Has anyone seen an egg like this?

This dark mark is rough like sandpaper.

The pale marks are smooth like the the rest of the egg. It looks like someone threw bleach or acid on it. It is mainly a light purplish colour.

If I tap it with my finger nail it sounds tinny. Very different to the sound of tapping other eggs.

Judging by the shape it is my Maran who normally lays a dark brown egg. After this one she (or whoever) laid one a solid (purplish)colour. Here both of them are next to one (top left) a similar but much lighter colour as the normal.

The solid purplish one sounds normal if tapped.

Cheers

Yes MyHaven .... I have had one egg very like the one shown above. Laid by my Rhode Island Red. Mostly rough and very porous texture on the outside - and my thought was at the time, that she didn't put the finishing touches (coatings ) on the egg. It had dark pink lines on it, and looked most peculiar - almost white for the most part ( and she lays totally pink eggs ). Can't say I tapped it so don't know what sound it would have made, but when I broke it open to use, it was as hard as the rest of the eggs always are. Just the rough un-even coloured texture of the shell. Most odd. Am still here to tell the tale, so there obviously was nothing wrong with the eating of it. Had another wrinkly one from my Welsummer on one occasion - a huge egg, and I think the poor girl squished it up a little to get it out !!

The egg was slightly flatter on one side ( for want of a better description ) and the wrinkles were well and truly set into the shell - and as hard as the rest of the shell was.

No worries .... but I guess it could happen again.

Cheers ........ AB

Hi, I cracked the egg after showing it to the last person here and as expected it was normal inside. So bizarre the tinny sound when I tapped it. I concluded as you did that the finishing touches weren't added. It was a little thin too. Cheers
