Australians - Where are you all????

Pics
They are absolutely adorable! Is it true that muscovies don't actually quack?

I saw your photo yesterday - you know how you get an image of someone in your mind? You are the opposite of my image! Got the idea in my head that you were blond - don't know why! Now at least I know who I am talking to! Me? I look just like my photo on Facebook!!

Anyway, enjoy your new ducks, they are Easter card cute!! I have got to the stage now that I HATE selling my chickens, sold 8 today at the poultry show and hated to see them go

,even though I knew they were all going to great homes.

Thanks for the welcomes

I love ducks. I had them once upon a time, but it's not easy when you're living in the middle of the city with a small-ish garden

I thought the same when I first saw your pic on FB wooklet.. Please dont take this the wrong way... But from your posts on here..I thought you would be about 25 years old, short blonde hair. You have the silkie up at the moment dont you?? I dont look at DP's much- so sometimes I get a surprise when I actually look and realize someone has changed theirs. Its funny how we can picture picture when we only speak on line- and then we actually see them. I actually have a bit of make up on in that pic- which I hardly ever do- but I thought that before I got a hair cut I should have a nice pic taken with it straightened. Its very much shorter now- and all my lovely curl has come back.

I have new photos to post now.. I have Runners hatching again. So different to the scovies... who dont quack.. they peep like other ducklings when little- and also have this little noise that a describe as a duckie purr.. Not like a cat at all- but a duckie version.

I sold a few yesterday too wooklet- and as always they got a last hug and kiss from me as I took them from the pen and handed them over to their new owners. I had a few extra drakes I has to sell- but I am happy they have found good homes. I have shed tears before saying goodbye. It is always easier when you know they are going to good homes- but I still worry about them and how they will cope with the change. One went to a lady who bought a ( pekin) duck from somewhere else- so he at least wont be on his own. The pair was bought by a fellow who was eyeing them off all day and the other drake was taken home by a lovely lady who is coming back this weekend to buy two of the babies. I rang her today to let her know the first of her " child brides" has hatched and despite me thinking she wanted me to raise them- she asked how soon she can come get them. She must have gone home and discussed things with the family and decided that raising ducklings cant be to different from chickens and they are looking forward to getting the two girls.

Oh I hear you.. Lucky I live on the outer edge of the city...and have a huge garden. In January I had a total of 78 birds here.. mostly babies inside the house- chickens and ducks. When I think back to that time not too long ago- I winder now how I found time to work full time and look after them all.

Yeah, it's tough, especially when you go on holiday! I only have four birds currently, a bunch of chickens that aren't particularly attractive, and we regularly have to call the neighbours to throw a bucket of feed over when we go away. It gets tricky with the water though, what with it evaporating so quickly.

Wish the water would evaporate here Whiteflare! It is pouring and has been for 2 days - thyis is when keeping chickens gets messy! The pens are wet, the ground is stinky and there is mud everywhere. I feel so sorry for the chickens, just as well I have a husband, who objects to poultry in the house - they'd all be sitting in front of the fire if I had my way!
A lady phoned me up last week and asked if I had any silkie eggs, I told her that I ddin't but would collect and save some for her - well, she never turned up, so I may as well put them in the incubator, what do you think?? DH has a collection of Barnevelder eggs again - sigh, MORE roosters that he can't or won't find homes for

Ducky, you took your photo down? I like your new one though. I'm not offended that you thought I was a blonde 25 year old - I was once!

whiteflare - we have the same problem - before we can go away I have to check with Uni dtr who is here sometimes, at partners other times and travelling out on Uni trips throughout the State, to make sure she can be here to walk the 2 dogs (hers!!) tend to the 9 chickens and water all the gardens.
I do find the water feeder my biggest problem as water just seems to vanish rapidly, I have looked at those long metal water and seed feeders that you see in the gardening maggos but so expensive. My girls have a proper egg laying box that dtr in law bought for me and they never go in there as they prefer to lay their eggs on the floor of the cage in the straw.

Wooklet - Yes my silkies prefer to sit out in the mud and rain than under cover in the coop - they end up looking like bedraggled filthy little things - as 2 of them are (when clean) pure white, another is beige, and their pom pom hair dos just flop like dreadlocks over their face.

White flare... You have birds and go on holidays??? I havent gone anywhere much in years. I have a block of land in the country- but when I stay overnight I take some of the ducks up with me- so that there is more food and water available to those who stay at home.

Wooklet, Melbourne has has its fair share too- Im am starting to dread winter now. Yes..I took it down. I thought - well I have so many photos I will change it every week or so for a while just to keep things interesting.

Dirtgirl- shop around and look online for some ideas for feeders and waterers. Have you seen those little nipple drinkers?? Something like that may be good as the water cant evaporate.

duckyfrom oz - No I haven't seen those 'nipple' feeders for the water. I shall have to google them as we are off again to Darwin at the end of May so perhaps by then I will have something suitable - just in case daughter does forget to top up/change water etc.

This is our first holiday away since getting the chickens last July, so I guess I will worry about them whilst I am away! My babies.....

Yes muscoveys don't quack. They kinda natter for a want of better way of describing it. I still laugh at my runners I have now as they actually do quack
big_smile.png
I hear them go past the window at 3am sometimes and I giggle when I hear there quack. Think the most annoying sound from an animal I have are the indian ring necks. They screach everytime you go near the avery.
