Yes, it's a chicken. Don't know how the word chook came to be though.

BellevueOmlet Yes...its a local term used to describe " chickens" Over here they are chooks if grown and Chickens when just hatched. Of course we have different names for ages when showing- Pullet Cockerel - Hen and Rooster as well though.

to BYC. I breed Indian Runners in the west of Melbourne. Nice to have " a Neighbour" aboard.

I'm in Australia!
I have had a faverolle and RIR (both bantams) for the past two years, just got a d'uccle and a plymouth rock to make up for the slowing egg production of the other two. They are awesome pets and I like knowing my eggs are from hens that are happy and healthy. I've worked out that if I buy two new pullets every two years I should get a constant supply of eggs without exceeding what my coop can hold. I hope it works coz I'm vego so I'm gonna let my chooks grow old and wise, no body gets killed unless suffering

We are in for a wet week here I heard on the news tonight- how is winter treating you?? Its doesnt really seem like winter just yet here in the west of Melbourne.

Thanks for explaining that to me ducky. I like the term and think I will adopt it.

Pullet, Cockerel, Rooster and Hen are the same. We just call them chickens regardless of age.
