Australorp or Jersey Giant????

welcome-byc.gif

I don't know if I am correct and just going to go off of my birds for comparison....so here goes! (Someone please correct me if I am wrong)

My Jersey Giant's have yellow on the bottom of their feet and their eye color is almost black compared to my Black Austrolorps (sp?) who have red bay colored eyes and the bottom of their feet are pinkish white. They also have different shaped combs than my JG's, and yes the JG's lay much later than the BA's. Most of my JG's didn't start laying until 9-10 mos old.
Hope this helps!

Pinkchick, my Australorp's eyes are dark brown.

One thing I've noticed different between BAs and Black Sex-Link is the eye color, the sex-links have reddish colored eyes.

well one of the eyes are black, almost, and one is kinda reddish orange. i guess we will have to wait and see

The yellow on the bottom of the feet points to Jersey Giants.

The reason feathersite has that little disclaimer is because hatchery JG may or may NOT have the yellow coloration on the bottom of the feet. White Australorps are a definite no on any yellow color on them.

aeg1001- What hatchery did you get yours from?

I am having the same concern with one of my chicks that was supposed to be a Black Australorp. She is 11 weeks old now, but about 9 weeks in the the photos. Here was the thread I posted the feet pictures in a few weeks back.

She is also a slow grower in comparison to the other 5 chicks her age that live across the street (They are on the same feed and everything) My other black chick, an australorp, was the totally the runt in her batch so I figured I picked the runt again until I thought about the feet color one day being different.

She is very sweet and curious, but I was really hoping for good egg layers, and I haven't found much info on the black JG laying abilities. A couple sources say good and some say fair to poor.

We actually got them from TSC. Just as with the RIR pullets we got that are now roosters, they said they were lorps and we are now thinking GJ. They produse big eggs, is what i was told. We are happy either way though. Hope you get what you want in the end too

I found this bit of information particularly helpful! We weren't sure if we had BA or JG's but one of them started laying eggs 3 days ago, at about 5 1/2 months old. Out of 9 chickens she was the second one to start laying now, about 1 month after our Red Star started. The bottoms of their feet were very yellow when they were young, but now they are more of a pink color which is why we weren't sure which type we have.

Anyone else own JGs and know approximately when they start laying?

I took the time to look at our hen's feet again and I am again confused as to what breed she is. One of them looks yellow, the other more pinkish but otherwise identical to each other to the point we cannot even tell them apart. She started laying eggs around 5.5 months old which makes me think it's an Australorp, but she looks like she has pink feet. Anyone have an ideas? We are really hoping for Australorps because of the reputation of being great layers.
