Wonderful! I've had many Australorp brood hens and they are very good at brooding eggs and taking care of their little ones.

And are they fairly docile?

All of mine have been docile. Easy to handle while brooding and also when they have little ones. Most of mine have gone broody late every spring. I have 5 Australorps right now including a 4 year old rooster and they have never given me any problems.

I have 20 something Australorps and all the hens are wonderful mothers. If anything, they are too good. I have to keep trying to break them from going broody in the summer. I don't want that many chicks!
