Australorps breed Thread

As you can see, we got Australorp babies. Sadly they didn't make it. Long story short, the PO delivered them to my house when they were supposed to hold on to them until I picked them up. Next shipment comes the first of next week.

Very sad! Did you call the PO and tell them the chicks were coming? At least up here the PO doesn't even offer to deliver them to the house. You are expected to pick them up at the PO first thing after they call in the morning. The chicks shouldn't be driving around in the rural carrier's car or the city carrier's LLV and then HOPE there is someone home to receive them.

My wife is the sole person in the PO where she works. One day she got chicks in that the guy had called about the day before to say he wouldn't be able to pick them up until after work. Fortunately she did have "new chick" knowledge from our 2012 chicks and was able to keep them warm and watered. Not sure that would happen at every PO.

So Sad ...Im sorry ...From a breeder or a person ?
They can put orange slices in for food ..water ..
Also have them mark the box
" Live Chicks Please keep warm DO NOT DELIVER

Most important to call post office twice...days before they are expected and to make certain they are to be picked up at the PO.

This was from Chickens from Backyards and the boxes were clearly labelled. When I called the PO after the fact, they couldn't understand why the chicks were shipped - I made sure they had my addy and phone number for my next shipment - I should say that Chickens for Backyards agreed to reimburse me, even for shipping, so I can't complain about them.

I think it was a combination of my fault and the PO's fault - as I said earlier, I didn't have the ambient temp of the brooder high enough for them, so some of this was my own fault. Hence, why I am terrified that I will kill my next shipment of chicks - even though I have since purchased a heat lamp and thermometer.

Hi y'all. I just saw some scary looking blue, black, splash australorp eggs on Ebay, or should I say pictures of a supposed Splash Australorp. If you want to know what you do not want to breed for then check them out! It looks like somebody mixed Leghorns in somewhere due to the squirrel tail and gigantic comb. I know it is not nice to dis another alledged breeder so consider this as an educational lesson.

When I first tried to buy eggs the rooster had feathered legs. Thank goodness for this place or I wouldn't have known to walk away so educate away ;-)

Nate, Bring on the pics!

They are very nice, and I am planning on setting eggs from them on Saturday or Sunday. Their eggs are large, but not as big as my leghorn eggs. I am AI them because I have a show in April, and their butts have 3 inches of fluff, and he is to big to mate with the them naturallym so it's better for the hens and the roo. I can't wait until babies from them.

I had no idea they used Ai with chickens!

It's not difficult at all, and doesn't even involve going inside the roo, it literally takes 10 seconds... Most breeders do it. They separate the hens from Roos to keep them in condition and AI them. I let mine stay together but my austrolorps are so big that they can't naturally mount.
