Australorps breed Thread

I have a serious question re the Astrolorp breed and the Georgia heat. It can get very hot and humid in southern GA sometimes reaching index heat of 103 with 70% humidity in the summer. How do they fare in this type of heat. Thank you for replying.
Heat index does not mean that much with chickens. The real temperature is what matters because of the way chickens cool themselves. We sweat and evaporation cools us off which makes us feel hotter in humid heat since evaporation is slower in high humidity.

Australorps will be fine Georgia as long as they have shade and water to drink.

I live over here in the desert in Arizona. The other day the temp reached 119 F. Mine all made it though. I had the misters going on a timer out there in the run for them that are now running from 7 am to 7 pm. Just don't place them too close to the coop itself, because the misters will create a puddle underneath that the chickens will also walk through. Walking through that water on the ground also helps them to stay cooler. Make sure that you have plenty of fresh clean water for them to drink closer to the coop in a shaded area. I also feed mine some cold treats during the hotter part of the day.

Speaking of hatching out eggs, I just put 9 eggs from my flock in my incubator and will add any eggs that I gather from them tomorrow in it. My incubator is in a spare bedroom that we only use for storage and my hatching addiction. :lau If all goes well, I should be looking at a July 17th hatch. Yes, my brooder is in the house too, and it sits right under my incubator. My young pretty Blue Australorp rooster has been busy with his 5 girls as even the splash hen isn't broody anymore and has gone back to normal.
