Australorps breed Thread

Quote: I have heard that before, some years more pullets hatch and some years more Cockerels hatch. It is sad really. A couple of people here in CA think Marans hatch mostly Cockerels.

It might have to do with the age of the Hens? They may have started firing eggs from the other ovary and it might have more female Ova. The thing to figure out if anything is different with the hens.

I hope you get to hatch more pullets this year!

Thanks Ron,
especially on behalf of my roo, Derrick, who I've been blaming for all the cockerels! And, most of them aren't nearly as good as dad! I used 3 different strains of girls with him and noticed no difference in the number of cockerels produced between the strains. Time of hatch seemed irrelevant too. Managed to rehome 3 boys - for free! Only 30 more to go. Not a great deal of demand for chicken soup either when it's over 100 degrees!
Cheers Geoff

Hi Everyone I have been lurking here for a while ..Thought I d say Hello .
We have a Austalorp Roo ..Non hatchery I believe Lucky is his name ..Named by my husband coz he has 8 ladies to choose from .
Our ladies are 1 RIR 8 red Sexlinks / Comets

The white tail you see is a second generation comet ..I believe .As a chick she was sexed a red female ..Turned out white .
We thought she would lay white eggs ..thought she wasnt laying for a while as all we got were brown eggs . Turns out she lays brown eggs also .
Has anyone ever crossed a RIR with a Australorp ? I am hoping for 1 broody in the spring

This is a BA rooster with a RIR hen. He is 3 weeks old now i will take pics and post to show what he looks like now. He was 2 days in these pictures.

My BA started making very strange sounds the other day.
Today, for the first time, we heard the famous egg song
several times throughout the day. I went out several times
to check around the coop and haven't seen any egg yet.
Can anyone tell me when we might start having an egg
to go along with the song? Thanks,
