Australorps breed Thread

It is Sad because they are so far from the SOP and it is Sad people buy those type of chicks and think they have an Australorp.

It costs no more to feed good quality Australorps from a breeder than it is does the poor representation of the breed from where ever. Just My Opinion!!

Dan that is our motto. All should follow it including first time 4Hers. They eat the same so they might as well be good. That is honestly another black chicken that lays brown eggs, with a title.

Dan and Cubakid,

I do understand your view totally. I do wish I had access to fine birds such as yours. But I am very thankful that at least I can have healthy hatchery hens to lay wonderful eggs. Otherwise I would have nothing. THAT would be SAD. Just saying...

My hatchery BA's have been consistent layers but I found it humorous that they did take off for the day on Thanksgiving. No eggs. Guess they deserved a holiday too.

I went to Great lengths to find a place to buy my chicks. It just depends on what you want and how much effort you are willing to put into it.

If I wanted JUST egg layers I would have ISA Browns, Red Sexlinks, or White Leghorns.

They are silly that way!

I waited two years to get my Hupp Australorps--he had a setback-- It was worth the wait though. They are very sweet chickens.

I started out with "just hens to lay" but after reading about the breeds I chose lorps. They have their drawbacks just like any breed, but I still like them best.

If you want to really open up your choices of where to buy, I would highly recommend getting an incubator and hatching eggs. I take the approach that each batch is a work in progress and should they not hatch, I would learn from it. I just bought some dorking eggs that I am really excited about. I would have never been able to get them where I am and sending live birds is pricey. You can order from most breeders and get what you want without loosing the shirt off your back. Just a thought.

I will add you learn a lot from the point of incubation to hatch to growth of the chicks. I think everyone needs to go through that to get what it takes to produce healthy stock that is human friendly.

I really enjoyed hatching eggs this year. I will be hatching more this coming year. I will be getting some Hupp eggs and I think I will try hatching some Marans, maybe some Cream Legbars also.
