Australorps breed Thread

Australorps are the sweetest birds. I never thought I'd care so much for something without eyebrows. :3

Realistically, I'd never expect your sweet Aussie girl to take over your flock. They are usually on the bottom of the pecking order and prefer to avoid confrontation. Even my two roosters barely squabble over their ladies and any disputes are handled diplomatically with Big Papa chasing Little Mister around the yard, rather than with spurs.

They. Are. A. HOOT. <3

Good point my flock is very mixed! I couldn't see her hurting any of them. I just didn't like the way they treated her! However I let them do there thing and she is still at the bottom but can roam the coop and free range with out getting as picked on. She is also a loner. She squats for me but not our Roo . The other day as I was drinking my coffee and getting my chicken watching therapy. My Roo got Oreo a nice big earth worm and called her over. Awww! It's funny to watch the dynamics.

EDIT: Generally the customers have no clue and have some misplaced faith that the store clerks know more than they about what's what....

It's not funny for the buyers but you'd think they would figure out that the clerks don't know either.
Depends on the store too..Management makes a difference .
TSC does teach them about chckens somewhat .
My local one in auburn New York ..Is real good about their care while they are there ..
The one in Geneva New York Sucks ! Thats how I got 6 white rock pullets for 1.00 each .
They would have been dead the next day ....too many in the pen & they were being pecked & drawing blood .
I still have 4 ...one died after about a week , one died about a month ago egg bound I think .
They all started laying at 4 months ..poor babies ..really too early .

Sounds like she thinks you are her Roo if she squats for you ...and not for him ?
I hope this is not offensive to you .
Some of My chickens will shake themselves off like they have been mounted when I put them down after being held .

Ignoring my amusement over this entire scenario.....this honestly is good information to know. Since I'm just learning to "speak chicken" I appreciate postings like this to illuminate me to the possibilities surrounding chicken behavior. (I'm still giggling over the idea of any human being perceived as a giant rooster. I guess I just have the giggles this morning.)

No not offensive at all! I kinda figured that. She is my youngest and was raised with a mille Fluer D'uccle . I didn't realize when I got her she was a bantam cause they were all mixed. So I ended up letting them grow together and then introduced Oreo to the big girls and chicken little to her new bantam coop and friends . Of course she did fine but Oreo did not. It's been about a month she is better now. Can actually roam the coop. Will she start to lay since she is squatting or does it have to be for the rooster.

Just to clarify Oreo is my Australorp
Chicken little is my bantam. Guess little would help with that
