Australorps breed Thread

I would email that back to them ...that you will buy from someone else this spring ..as you werent satisfied with their customer service
I get that at snack time ( before Bed ) with 23 chickens ...have to fight my way out back
We feed cracked corn inside the houses just before bed time....that way, they keep the bedding stirred up.

Sent them a FB message explaining the situation and that I had tried contacting earlier but probably in the middle of their busy season so I understood, etc. Got a nice email almost right away, how glad they were I was otherwise happy, so sorry for no reply earlier, sorry about the cockerel, BUT maybe I could contact a local breeder for the missing pullet, we can't ship one chick, we don't reimburse after 12 weeks (even tho I had tried before within that time frame) and never for shipping anyway, "Merry Christmas".
Hmmm, well I was planning on maybe getting some stock from a different breeder in the spring anyway.
We've been buying a lot of birds from them in the last couple or three years and that might...but shouldn't make a difference. You should send one more email..to Jeff. Tell him what has transpired and that you will buy elsewhere if they can't take care of small problems as it seems and you would have no faith in relief should you have a larger problem with Cackle hatchery.

In the last few years, MM has been sending out (but making good on) a fairly high percentage of mis-aligned beaks and bad leg and thigh joints.  This is difficult to see as small chicks but grow progressively worse very quickly when the defects are manifest.  Some folks try to work with the problems but I wouldn't  waste my time as my years are rolling right along as well.  lol

That's good to know. I personally recieved very healthy birds. You purchased the Austrolorp as well?

No, my son got Australorps from MM. They were fine layers and had no serious defects. They were just a bit small or actually...quite a bit small. But they laid good eggs and a lot of them!

My Grandpa got Australorps from them in in 1954 or 56...I'd have to check to make sure but it has to be right in there.

I got super lucky and caught a breeder getting rid of her Australorp trio to make room for her Jersey Giant project. :) We also picked up a second rooster from her and cleaned her out! :D

We're hatching some of the eggs from those birds now... Very excited to see what we get! I'm looking forward to adding some blues in and playing with genetics. :)

This may be a little off topic but my Australorp hen has a lot of feathers missing on
her back from our breed happy roo. Does anyone know where I can get a pattern
to make her some of those little aprons?

Thanks so much!

There's quite a few simple patterns out there otherwise Louise country closet has saddles with and without wing covers for a decent price. And they're pretty good about getting it shipped in a convenient time frame.

As to the big girls flying - mine can and do!! After one was lost to a coyote, (in broad daylight), I had to clip one wing to keep them where they are safe. They don't seem to be able to fly very far, but can easily get to the top of the fence and then fly down. A very big pain in the

I hope you never have a problem with coyotes. I think they are the primary scourge in this part of the country. Without dogs, the only way we could have chickens is cooped or to try and make very large pens...which, despite what many think...is NOT free-range.

If it ever came to that, we just wouldn't have chickens. Hell, if we had any sense, we'd get rid of 90% of what we have now and give ourselves a life! lol

EDIT: Seriously, before we ever let our lives get into a rut, we WOULD eliminate all but layers enough for us and whatever meat bird we finally decide is best for us...be it the Dark Cornish or one or more of the hybrid crosses we're working on for caponizarion. As things stand right now... We're all pretty darned content.
