Now, no chicken talk. He's new to all things country. Didn't even know there was more types of chickens than "red ones"... The other day he was talking about the Lakenvelders to someone and referred to them as Oreo chickens. I almost died laughing.

Same man doesn't ( well, didn't) know what bob white quail were and that horses had to have visits from the farrier. He's a good man and a great husband, but, absolutely clueless on animal husbandry of any kind. Two years into it and I'm still teaching him.

He's never seen a broody in person, so, I spent twenty minutes last night shoving my phone in his face to show him how broodies go all zombie on steroids... He still doesn't thing the alien reference is funny. I need one of my game hens to go broody while he's home and make him collect eggs from under her. Muhuhuahaha.

Hahaha! This sounds very familiar. We have 15+ breeds and my husband can only identify the few that really stand out like the Silver Spangled Hamburg and the Blue Cochin (because she comes inside with my youngest son). We both grew up in Perdue country. The only chickens around here are white. Rocks,Cornish, and Leghorns are very popular, because that is what Frank Perdue would come and purchase from you. If you are fortunate enough to know someone that had a backyard flock you may know about RIR, Dominiques, Barred Rocks, and Orpingtons. Sadly people around here do not go much further than those 4. My mom raised Polish, Silkies, Langshans, and Dorkings. We were odd. We had a neighbor that had an Ameraucana Flock...people thought that she was a witch.
 
DesertChic, your ladies are lovely! That picture where you got the green sheen is awesome. Mine is still in that moldy-looking teenage state, with scraggly black feathers and a white fuzzy head. Hoping to see that pretty sheen soon.

Mine is indeed at the bottom of the pecking order, as predicted. No troubles eating though, seems like she's always chowing down on something. Little piglet. Thanks for the welcome everyone!

Ha! I'm reading all of these and wondering what batch I got my husband from! He is the FIRST one to tell people about our chickens and works it in to just about every conversation we have with new people. I'm guilty of the same, but it's really, really nice to have an ally in chicken-keeping. :)
