Nice looking Rooster!

I like the way Orpingtons look, but it would be sad to lose the graceful curves of the Australorp standard.

we finnaly might have some decent females coming next spring for that rooster..they are rare as hens teeth to find..we tried some hatchery stock but they never live up to the better parent..so hopefully fingers crossed it will be a good year for them 2013.as advised by walt and chet and a few others , not going to cross the blk orp pullet with him..the offspring ( male) will be too big for show..i almost did just because there was no good pullets avail. but good things come slow i guess..

Ron, I finally checked out the link to the APA. I do know about the SOP books, but what I was wanting to know if it is just printed somewhere, without purchasing the entire book. In showing dogs every breed has a parent club, and every club has a written standard on their page. This doesn't seem to be so with chickens? Also, many breeders tend to copy the standards verbatim on their web pages. Has anyone done that with this breed? Please excuse my ignorance, just trying to learn here.

Hi Madhen80,

I have read the SOP for Australorps but it looks like the link to it has been replaced with one to the new SOP. I guess they really want us buy it.

Try sending a pm to fowlman01. He is a poultry Judge and may be able to get you the SOP for Australorps.

Hi Aveca,

I have been over at the Heritage RIR thread and Robert Bosl, the thread starter has rules for good breeding. One of them is to not cross lines. I have seen the problems he talks about with this both on this thread and the Marans thread. When you cross from outside the breeder lines, you get messed up genetics. Robert says to get new chickens from the same line if you need to, but only when fertility goes down. Apparently, it can take 20 years to fix the problems by moving outside of the line you are using.

You should get hens that come from the same line as your Rooster. If you don't know what line he is from, then you should get some new ones from an established line. Then find another breeder with that line and trade off with them when needed.

Bye,

Ron

thanks ron...i did almost do that..just because the hens are so scarce..the breeders wont part with them..the rooster has well established show winning line, an old line from mass..but i think better of it now..not going to do it...i did try to cross him onto 1/2 hatchery stock, but those seldome live up to the better parent..so hes only 3 hopefully get something nice out of him..eventually..i took everybodys advise and wont do that..

Oh, I am sorry about that. What you might try is to hatch as many of the eggs he sires as you can. You might get one good hen out of ten hatched. If you can get two or three this year you should be able to get maybe two or three out of 10 next year.

If not, maybe you could get those breeders to sell you some hatching eggs. Are they not selling them because they think you might take away their Blue Ribbons? Sad if so. Not very chicken friendly I suppose.

I am still thinking about getting some of the Sherman Line BAs.
