Australorps breed Thread

Hi again, folks,
just some food for thought, but if, as it appears from the few pics I've seen, your bantams have better conformation than your standards, is it possible that they were bantamised in the States early on from good stock sent from here? Or, that they were bantamised here and good stock sent there? The originals may have survived purer in bantam form with less commercial 'interference'. Anyone know the history of aussie bantams in the US?
Cheers Geoff from Aus

anythfing you guys have probably blows anything we have away...importing isnt that hard but all told vets on both ends paperwork ect...ect...it costs around 100.00 per egg to get them xere, if you can get 3 doz your chances are decent to hatch some..pampered poultry can walk any one of us through it..she does it often..she said its something like $4,000.00 to import a pair..eggs would be easier..

Hi folks,
I'd like to stress once again that I'm not posing as some Aussie aussie expert. I've kept them off and on for years, like most Aussies, but my only serious breeding was with langshans. However, I am willing to chase up any queries you have as I can access some very good breeders. It seems that you are a ways off with configuration, though I do like where your heading. You have the best birds I've seen from the States. Still, some good Australian bloodlines would speed things up. I can access a few different bloodlines for eggs for you from this end if it would help. If you guys can sort the import/quarantine issues, you might consider what some different creature enthusiasts did. They formed a kind of syndicate where folk basically bought shares in the breeding stock. The fertile eggs were sent to a small number of expert breeders who then shared the progeny, or future generations, with other shareholders, according to their level of financial commitment. Would it be worth sounding out Australorp stream members? Hope I'm not "teaching you how to suck eggs." Only trying to help.

Hi again,
isn't what your early bantamisers did, kind of what you're thing of doing with standard orps? Breeding question -could it be quicker and easier to breed up and down in size between bantam and standard than to continue soley down the current path? A question, not an opinion!

Hi again,
Attached some pics of some of my aussies. I'm not putting my roo, Derrick, up as some ideal bird, but he has such a great personality/temperament, that he'll die of old age, maybe serving one old girl when he's up to it! I know it's hard from pics, but I'd be interested in your opinions of him. I think he's good, but for great, see my avatar. The birds aren't in great shape as it's winter here, the hen is coming out of moult and the pullet hasn't even started laying. My other girls are on 'holiday'!
I used to be a bit hard-nosed about my chook breeds, not wanting pretty 'lapchooks'. My chooks needed to lay eggsI But, have been completely sucked in by d'Uccles. They are soooo cute and friendly that I don't really care if they're 'useless'. They make me feel good, that's enough! I digress, hope you like my chook pics.

Grand-daughter's aussie pullet, Anu, with adopted blue Pekin and very young d'Uccles. A mom, without even having laid an egg! Australorps are great backyard chooks!

Me with my other birds, Dook Dook, the d'Uccle and Wonky, the free-flying cockatoo.

Looks like you are a real "birdman" Geoff. I love this photo of Derrick. He puts the birds here to shame. I am glad you mentioned his temperment. That is the most important to me, and I am glad it has been preserved in the Australian birds.

We all seem to end up with a "lap chook," even if it is a standard size.
