Australorps breed Thread

Is it standard that top breeders do not sex chicks when they sell them and just sell straight run. I'd appreciate any more suggestions on my quest for Black Australorps!

Thanks to everyone who has had suggestions so far!

Dan
Very few breeders are Orientals who have the eyes to sex chicks ! Caucasians just have to wait a bit longer as we are very bad at vent sexing.

Thanks! It is looking more and more like I may have to look at other breeds. It just seems BA breeders in my area are rare.

Cackle has BAs between hatchery and show quality. They sell pullets in an urban pack of 5. I was very impressed with their website--they do not call EEs Ameracaunas. It seems like there is a new generation taking over the Family business.

Two years ago I bought a 5 pack of BAs from them and of the five, 3 of them were very nice. There were no surprise Roos either.

As was posted earlier here, Cackle and Ideal have picked up SQ stock from local breeders to improve their stock.

I agree with Dragonlady, vent sexing is tough and you can hurt the chick if not done right in day olds. It takes me 6 to 7 weeks to be pretty sure and then you can still get fooled with BA's. A lot of other breeds are much easier to sex. Some breeders would rather sell day olds and ship them because they still have yolk in their bellies and that is straight run, males and females. It is a lot cheaper to sell day olds and not have to feed them for a while to see what you have. On the other side of the coin, a breeder may want to hold onto his or her line to see how they turn out. If you find a breeder with two month olds and wants to part with them, you would be golden.

Ok! I have read on here until my eyes feel crossed and my neck hurts! :) I want some Quality Australorps to start a small flock.

Please help me figure out what my options are and where I can get them. I prefer day old chicks. At least that is what I am thinking. I have not seen any Australorps at Rural King or TSC this year so far. Should I just order from a hatchery? I am concerned a little about the Quality of birds I might get.

Should I buy from a private breeder? Who has a good reputation and will have chicks available in the next few weeks?

Please don't hesitate to give me some direction or options. I realize the best is always an opinion formed by each individual, but I need some options. Also feel free to send me a private message.

I am new to chickens but not breeding. I have bred dogs for many years and bred many winners, Grand Final winners, & show Champions. I just want to get a start in Chickens and Australorps I think are gonna be my breed of choice?

Should I keep only one breed or mix in other breeds? Help!!

I am in Southern IL.

What about Robert Whitney in Bath NY ??? I've seen his birds at shows. They are gorgeous & big

and he wins with them. Unfortunately, I have no contact information for him.

Maybe someone here could help both of us out with some contact info.

Aveca I got them from tractor supply. If they are not full astralorps I'm going to be very mad. I am hoping they do turn full black and be full blood astalorps. I have grown attached to them regardless of what breed they maybe
