Australorps breed Thread

Great conversation going. I do enjoy learning new things and hearing your ideas.

I had never heard of oxine, Ron. So to start learning more about it I read the reviews at Amazon. lol Sounds like an amazing product. Will search out more info on it.

So whether I do or I don't use medicated feed I better have Corid on hand because the chicks could be dead in two days if they get sick with Cocci. ~Dee~

Yes! and the medicated feed will not cure a chick that has it.

Corid is one of the things in my health kit.

Hi folks,
on the subject of feeding, thought you may find the above experiment interesting. From an old state Ag. Dept. publication, from the days when we really studied our chooks in this country.
A few vintage pics of Australian Langshans and 'Australian' Croad Langshans so you see what Ross has been referring to in his breeding suggestions.

An early Australian Langshan.

A 'Chinese'/ Australian Langshan.

Australian version of Croad boy. "..an adult cock should weigh not less than 9 lbs."

Can see bits of BA heritage in this girl.

The English version of Croad. Note the red hackle comment in point 2.

Cheers Geoff from Aus

Ron, The Corid I find around here is labeled for calves, both in powder & liquid. Is this what you are using? If so how do you dose it? They have Ampromed which is labeled for poultry but looks like Corid might be more cost effective over the long haul.

I have never had a case of coccidia in my young birds since I started feeding medicated starter 35 + years ago. I do run fecals too ,to check for parasites and oocysts. I start worming at 2 weeks, before the roundworms are able to mature, as I've found that waiting until 4 weeks can give them a toe hold. The difference in growth of the babies is obvious.

The dosage is:

Corid 20% soluable powder dosage is 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water for 5-7 days. Dont mix anything else into the corid/water solution.

It does say calf or bovine on it. Most things are not labeled for chickens but are safe for them. The seller does not want to spend the money on getting FDA stuff going.

There are people out there that want eggs and meat from chickens that have never been fed non organic feed of feed with Soy or Corn. The egg farmer I am working with is setting up a pen like that for sales to folks on a special diet. I have not found medicated feed that works for that.

Some places have worse fungus that cuses Cocci too and the medicated feed does not protect them long enough to build resistance.
