Australorps breed Thread

These are coming from Ideal. They pushed my hatch because they didn't have enough orders on the date I was quoted two months ago. :shrug

Its a little frustrating because I had everything planned financially, and I didn't want to spend that this close to the first of the month.

I would demand my money back and order from a more reliable hatchery.

EDIT: Having them come later is one thing, even acceptable but to send them early without even consulting you is unacceptable, IMHO!!!!!!

Financially, that would mess a lot of things up for me and my family. My family is poor. We have a strict budget and savings plan. If anything goes over we are in trouble. I wish more Americans were straight up about it. Like you and I are. One reason to raise our own food (I cannot afford the grocery store food or med bills for the crap that is in them) I understand your frustration.

EDIT:  Having them come later is one thing, even acceptable but to send them early without even consulting you is unacceptable, IMHO!!!!!! I have heard bad things about Meyers and Mt. Healthy. Meyers sent chicks out without notice two weeks early and our friends were not ready. The coop that they had ordered had just shipped that day, along with the heat lamps, bulbs, and bedding for the brooder. They came home because a nice neighbor had taken them from the postal worker and called. They had to rush out and buy everything double. On top of all of that, Meyers did not even send the chicks that they ordered.
The Mt. Healthy issue was with a Sothern States store. They had an agreement with the company to supply them with chicks on Tuesdays and Fridays. This had worked out well for years. Then the manager started to receve chicks on Mondays and Wednesday. After two weeks of it happening she called the company. They apologized, and informed her that they changed her shipping dates. The manager said that She would like to go back to her regular dates due too customer flow. (She didn't want to care for chicks over night. Tuesdays people picked up orders that were placed, and Fridays worked because people would come in and buy.) They told her that they would change the dates back. They did for one week. Now the store is prepared to keep chicks over night, and they do not promise customers the chicks that they personally ordered for them in the next delivery. Sorry for mistakes or whatnot
My thumbs are shot now.

If I were going to get hatchery chicks, (which I have in the last couple years), I get them straight form the hatchery. No point in paying for the middle man (Southern States, Tractor Supply etc) plus it adds to the prospect of too many people handling your chicks that could give them diseases.

I own NO interest in Cackle Hatchery but they have treated me well and I have a very good relationship with the management.

I really don't like Murray M. but they are at least far better than either Ideal or Myers or Mt. Healthy. I speak of MM because I know about them but Myers and Mt. Healthy have such awful reputations, I just couldn't deal with them...JMHO

I wish that I had known thsee things before placing my own orders. I have purchased from MMcMurray and Meyers. There are not many breeders or people who want to sell anything where I am. Plus the time in quarantine and meds would have cost me more than hatchery chicks. My son's show birds we did have to spend extra on and deal with far away breeders.
My family has purchased from MM for 3 generations. The last time they ordered I was in elementary school. I do not remember the details. So of course they would be my first hatchery choice. I will let everyone know how everything goes this year with my brand new chicks. I am a bit worried about it, but I really did not have a choice, but to work with hatcheries.
Is there a hatchery that anyone recommends?

MM used to be the hatchery of choice for people around my area and there is a very large bunch of people who keep chickens in WV. The major problem that I've heard a LOT about and have seen a couple examples of are birds with twisted beaks and many with leg problems, especially in RIR and Australorps.

I recommend Cackle and have done for some time. Several folks have taken my advice on BYC and I haven't heard any complaints as of yet.
