Australorps breed Thread

Some of my Aussie Australorps. Unfortunately the cockerel has started showing some red on his wings.

Can't tell from the video, but if some of the feathers are actually red, not just a red sheen, that is desirable for breeding. Breed him to a good hen, that has excellent coloring. Red, or purple sheen is not desirable.

It was gross this morning, but, I did get some new pictures. The pens are yucky because I've been pent up with strep for almost a week, and I had to go to Houston today. But they're HUGE now.

I bet they LOVE having access to those logs.... BUG CITY!!!!

I ran across an interesting idea the other day.

For those of us looking for a BBS gene, has anyone experimented with a BBS Jersey Giant x BA, instead of a BBS Orp x BA?

I know once you add another "breed" into the line, you get more of an Orp body-type and have to breed BA back into it to get rid of fluffy undercarriage and other Orp qualities while praying you get the BBS gene you want with the right body type.

Would it be easier to add BBS JG genetics? I know they are very similar in body-style. I imagine the more JG you have, the larger you'll get. Egg production would be a sacrifice, I feel.

I've never considered it before. Thoughts, anyone?

I am thinking that the outcome would be the same as your thoughts. You would also darken the eyes and bring down the maturing time. But then you must think about the attributes of the Aussies. It could "improve" the JG. Possibly even less fat on the chicken.

My Aussie girls are getting really close to laying time. One has a super-red face and wattles and the others are starting to catch up to her. I'm so anxious for that first egg!!!

One oddity, however: Last Friday I took the feed out to my flock as I always do and then opened the door to the coop so they could run out to feed....but one of my Silkie cockerels chased all four of my much larger Australorp girls back into the coop and wouldn't let them come out until the 3 Silkies and 3 Barred Rocks had their fill. I was stunned! This came out of nowhere! And it seems that both Silkie roos and my BR roo are all in on it, as they all took turns shooing the Aussies into the coop until the rest of the flock had eaten. Prior to this the Aussies were always the first to feed. Apparently I didn't warrant a copy of the memo about the change in status because I was caught completely off-guard.
