Australorps breed Thread

Wow. Ok, thanks for the suggestion. I will look into it. I would love to keep him.

Just a warning...there are those who consider this operation as barbaric but then, there are those who think eating eggs or any sort of meat is equally inhumane so keep that in mind. I have caponized cockerels for years and there is some risk to the bird but if you find someone with long experience, the odds in favor of complete success is very good..

There is a thread here on BYC that may shock you but it might also help you keep the cockerel. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

As an example, my daughter is an adult and free to do as she pleases, I would argue with her right up to the pointing of mounting a horse with her, if she decided to try to ride any horse that hasn't been GELDED. Stallions and mares can be difficult for even very experienced riders. I only tell you this to equate the gelding process is much the same process and equally safe if done by a qualified person.

I'm glad you added the disclaimer. It's not something to be done lightly to a loved pet.

I'm in the it's barbaric camp but then I think posting living chicks is too so what do I know ;-)

True but handing him off to someone who might be interested in lopping off his head (which is fine if they' re honest about it) wouldn't improve his lot in life and he might not have the chance to ever be a truly beloved pet.

Don't get me wrong...There have only been three or four birds on this farm that have ever had 'names' but they met their demise the same as all the others. I was only offering her an option that might work in her situation...

Realise that but I see so many people on here suggesting it like it's taking your cat to be de sexed that it really WAS good to see someone add a disclaimer. :). I've not so much got a problem with the procedure as the fact it's far too often done by folks "having a bit of a try" with zero anaesthetic or pain relief.

That all said they really pose a dilemma the old roosters. We had to find one a new home but he turned quite mean towards us towards the end and had made attacking our youngest his life's mission. Made the whole process a lot easier though as by the time he went I was sort of glad and it was so nice to just go out with the hens after he was gone. Going to hatch again next spring and I'm quite resigned to the fact some boys may end up dinner. Don't envy their fate but I also eat a lot of chicken so can't really bemoan it lol. I've come a long way since stressing so much about our first maniac boy finding a good home :). Who knows maybe one day I'll even be able to eat them myself, nobody with a name though! At the moment I still struggle to eat anyone I've met personally :)

Well I finally got around to weighing my Australorps... the ones I bought as standard sized birds...

They are 6 months old now.

Their weights are as follows -
Blue pullet - 1.43kg
Larger black pullet - 1.75kg
Smaller black pullet - 1.34kg
Splash pullet - 1.71kg
Blue cockerel - 2.08kg

So as far as I'm aware, that pretty much confirms that they're all bantams... I'm pretty disappointed, but they are such lovely chickens that its okay

I've been told that they're really lovely, good quality chooks, so I'm happy with that!
