Hi everyone, I am brand new to chickens and this site has been so helpful!

My girls are about 17 weeks old now and I think one of my australorps is getting ready to lay! She has been squatting when I get close to her for a little over a week now. Her comb and wattles are also getting bright red.

She , along with my Wyondotte, has also sung the "egg song" a few times the last few days but no eggs... I run out as soon as I hear it and search everywhere, but nothing. Is that normal?
Here she is:

Awe what a sweet looking pullet! Sounds like she is getting close to me, my BA girls waited until 20 weeks and sang the egg song for weeks before laying! Mine seem to like a little pat on the back when they squat down...maybe they think im their rooster :plbb

I heard all kinds of commotion, squatting like crazy, etc for a week before an egg. One thing I noticed was that she sat in the neSt box a little but didn't really kick the shavings around and make a nest. Once day there was a chicken butt-sized divot in the shavings and an egg came the next morning. Keep an eye out for a little nest in there and I'll bet you get an egg shortly after! And by all means, post a pic!

Hi everyone, I am brand new here and I have been looking for Black Australorps here in Virginia but without any success. I would like to raise 6 to 10 Australorps in my backyard, I grew up on a farm so I'm confident in my ability to raise a few in the backyard. Is there anyone that would be willing to sell and ship me 12 to 18 fertile black Australorp eggs?
