Australorps breed Thread

Thank you for the welcome :)

Welcome aboard!

So on a different note did I just get a pig instead of a chicken or are all australorps driven by their stomachs? I swear one day I am going to trip and end but up in the coop because she keeps running round and between my legs frantically waiting for some imaginary morsel I might drop. The other breeds all look expectantly but she just rushes round and round in anticipation. I'm also reaching a point I'm thinking I may need to give her treats seperate to the rest as she just inhales the lot barely giving the others a chance to get anything!

Two of my four Australorps behave the same way. One will actually leap into the air to my chest height to see what I could possibly be carrying for her to eat. She's like a puppy jumping around me until I either fail to supply the expected treat or manage to get past the crowd of vulture-like chickens to place the treat on the ground for them. Of all my birds, it's only my Aussies that are so food motivated.

Oh wow, that's even worse! Mine only did that once when she could see I had something particularly yummy lol. I couldn't handle that all the time!

Just had another thought. I've always just let my hens have feeders access all day. Is that such a good idea with a piggy? I don't notice her at them so much. It's more treat time but now wondering if they can get too fat.

I would suggest that you just keep an eye on her growth. If she'd not getting fat, then don't worry. I also put feed out for my chickens in the morning and leave it there all day. They eat when they want it and forage throughout the day. Some days there's leftover feed in the container and some days it's licked clean. When it comes to eating habits, most chickens are smarter about it than we humans are.

Cracrzy,
Those RSR BBS Aussies look fantastic. Broad backs, nice tented tail feathers, correct coloring for the blues and dynamite lacing. I am glad you are happy with them. Next year I will be pushing for more splashes with more darker spots out of one of my breeding pens also, sorry you did not get any this hatch.
