Australorps breed Thread

I have to hand it to my Australorps...they live up to their reputation for being outstanding layers. Even in 110+ temps and humidity at 42% these girls just laugh it all off and have each continued to give me large eggs almost daily. One of my Aussie girls, Lulu, will lay more than 20 days straight before taking a day off and so far set the record here on my "farm" by laying 42 days straight without a break in the late spring. The few people I know in my area who also keep chickens have been buying eggs from me because their girls of other breeds stopped laying weeks ago. What amazing birds!

That is awesome! :D

If you don't mind me asking, what do you charge per dozen?

I'm only charging $3.00 per dozen because most of my customers are friends, associates and people I've met through our business. I'm not looking to make a profit, but just to offset some of my feed costs by selling my surplus eggs. In my first two months of selling surplus eggs, taking into account what we ourselves have eaten in both eggs and meat, I've essentially broken even on income vs costs. I've been told by more than one person that I should be charging much, much more given the current prices in the store. If I were doing this as more of a business venture then I would, but if I didn't have so many buyers for me eggs I'd probably be donating them to the local food bank.

No one should argue with $3 bucks, considering what those rotten ones are being sold for in the mega-marts.

The sad thing that I have seen is that people think the eggs we produce should be less than the store. Somehow they think it does not cost us anything to produce them.

Some think that I should be giving them to them.

Yeah...I've met a couple people like this too. "Well, you can't possibly eat all of those eggs yourself anyway," was the rather condescending remark from one person. You can't buy eggs in the stores around here for $3.00 now, and even the bulk eggs sold at Costco work out to be more expensive. If someone's that opposed to paying me for my eggs then I just shine them on. I refuse to indulge or reward the entitlement mentality.

When you count the cost housing , bedding , feed - $3.00 is not enough ..but NOTHING Beats FRESH EGGS

That's the truth! And I LOVE deviled eggs. I always think I've made too many but they disappear so quickly I soon discover that I didn't make enough. Just in strict egg consumption and not counting eggs used in baked goods, etc., my family (and mainly me) easily consume about 2-3 dozen eggs per week...and there's only three of us.

Too many eggs is easily solved with potato salad, deviled eggs, omelets, and cooking them to feed them back to the chickens. Just wish them the best in their hunt for free eggs.
