Wel thats all just pretty annoying though. If I buy a 5kg bag of shell grit I shouldn't have to waste my time spreading and drying and repackaging the darn stuff. Why do they pack it up wet in the first place ugh. These were bags the feed store had packaged from a larger bag. Might buy it somewhere else next time I think. I'm not game to use this one now.

I am thinking they repacked it BECAUSE it was wet ...it should not be wet ..
another store might be better if this is a continuing problem

I've not found a good way to keep their oyster shell from being wasted or ignored, but have a way to keep them limited in interest which is by saving and grinding and adding their own egg shells back to their feed.

I too have thought of doing this, but right now we are having a huge problem with sugar ants and I'm afraid keeping anything like egg shells long enough to grind them back up and put back into the feed would just prolong my problem with these blasted ants. It is a good consideration, however, especially if I was to use a lot of eggs in one day - could wash and dry off the shells for later.

I crush and reuse all my egg shells, mixed with the oyster.
There are a couple threads here on that and opinions thereof
if the ants are a concern, washing and then baking them (dry up residual eggs?) may work.
I don't generally bake mine, just air dry but if I happen to be cooking something else in the oven I will pop in my shells after turning off the oven as it cools and it does make them a little easier to crush for use.

You can probably put the used egg shells into a carton and put them in the fridge? I'm pretty sure they would still dry out eventually? I grind mine and put them in a mason jar, and use as needed. I've never used oyster shells.
