Australorps breed Thread

Those are excellent ideas! As far as the ants, I am using Diatomaceous Earth and its working well inside the house, however the ants are so established under our foundation that I am going to have to start using a bait to knock the population back - if we had a freeze, it might knock them back, but after the warmest winter on record, and unseasonably warm weather the past 10 years, I doubt we'll get a freeze. *sighs*

As far as the eggshells go, I think I am going to use this method - keeping them in the fridge and then baking them for a bit in the oven! Thank you all for your suggestions!

When are you suppose to get them? How old will they be? Are they sexed?

We should get them the second week of February. We ordered pullets but the hatchery claims to have a 90% success rate of sexing chicks - so we might end up with a rooster. I considered this when I ordered, so I got two extra pullets from our original number, figuring that gave me a good bit of insurance, and if all end up being hens, I can relocate one or two.

I ordered three Austs and 3 Barred Rocks. These two breeds, not only do I really like the looks of, but all I read about them seemed just perfect - great layers, big eggs and docile personalities. I am so thankful that someone on this list talked me out of Rhode Island Reds and into Australorps - saying that the Reds more often than not had a rough disposition with other breeds and for a good buddy for the BR, to try Austs - and after looking at them, I feel hard. I love the look of them!

Black australorps will not let you down so long as you give them what they need.
