Hatchery birds and Breeders birds cost the same to feed, but do not even look close. Look for a breed that suits you. Search out breeders and check out their stock it saves you in the long run, unless you just want something that lays an egg.It is a lot easier to just order them from a hatchery. Even if you want fewer than the minimum, I have never found it hard to find homes for the extra chicks. Especially in areas where you can't hit the Tractor Supply lottery (ie, get there before they sell out the shipment). To increase your odds locally, call and find out when the shipment is coming in.

Sometimes it just takes them awhile to get it right. How high are your nest boxes? They should be below the roosts. Are they covered and out of the way of the rest of the bunch. Do they have curtains? Are they easy to get into with a rail and something to stop the eggs from falling out. Straw, pine chips, cedar, sand whats in them? See all kinds of conditions affect the chooks.
