Australorps breed Thread

Thanks. So I'm debating on doing just two doors on the back so that I can open up the and rake the waste out. Or i might put some pull out drawers in the bottom that could be removed. What do you all think?

If I where to start a coop from scratch ...I would probably do a door front & back ..
For ease of cleaning and air circulation..it is nice to be able to open it all up and let it air out .

I agree. I love big doors on a coop for exactly that reason. If I were capable of building a sliding poop drawer/board, I would do that, too. Then I would situate the coop so I could just scoot the litter from the board to the compost pile. Best of both worlds.

Austrolorp or Jersey Giant??? We were under the impression she was an austrolorp, but now being told she could be a Jersey Giant.

Think yellow feet (or under feet) is a jersey giant thing. Australorps have grey feet.

That said they could just be australorp crosses and the yellow feet are coming from something like leghorn being mixed in.

Yep, yellow soles is JG or something else mixed in an Australorp. Soles should be pinkish white. It could also be a mix from generations in the past that rears its ugly head.
Check the skin that is under the feathers. Yellow skin is a mix or JG's. White skin is an Australorp!

She is actually not very big. Out of 21 chicks we got at the same time she is one of the smaller ones. She had a small bout of dehydration and I was dropper feeding her water. She came back, but was so tiny compared to the others. She is now the size of the other smaller chicks. I do have black sex link and Delawares that are huge though. I was at the feed store where we got them and they had more "austrolorps" in. I picked up several and checked their feet and they all look just like mine. The first pic was at about 1 1/2 weeks. The other 2 are 4 weeks. So are you guys thinking she's a mix?

If they are all the same at the feed store I'd be tempted to think they are just coming from a not very pure line. When I first looked for eggs for mine I had a guy selling Australorp eggs. I asked for photos of the parents and dad had feathered legs. I think unless you are buying from a proper breeder you never really know just how much australorp is in your australorps.

Do you know which hatchery they use? My two 2015 "Black Australorps" from Meyer have black legs and one still has yellow foot bottoms. That is how I tell them apart so while not "standard" it is kinda helpful. My two 2012 BAs from Ideal have proper foot and leg color. I noticed the Meyer birds have VERY slightly large combs but you have to look at them side by side to see it.
