Australorps breed Thread

jc12551,
If it was me, I would not mess with cackle. I'd go back and get chicks from the place you got you others from! Great layers!!. I don't know about Cackle, but I hope you will let me know where your two sister birds came from. Seems they are on the right track for layers. ............stan

No artificial light was used. They were just powerhouse little birds. If they missed a day I would get two from them the next day. They came from MM. Out of the 50 ordered, only those two survived. I can't remember what disease they were shipped with. I split an order with another lady and hers died too. All of them! MM did refund my money. I am looking for an Australorp breeder that sells good quality birds that are egg layers. Do you know of anyone?

. Hope I can get some going that will lay that well. Sorry , but I do not know any breeders that sell layers...........stan

I got 5 ba day-olds from a local feed store this past April. All were supposed to be pullets but 1 turned out to be a roo. He's HUGE (I need to take a pic). Now that I found this thread, I'd love to cross him with a blue. Any blue australorp breeders around? Would LOVE to take some chicks off your hands! PM me!

(I'll post pix of my BAs when I can. Poor fella, tho, got frostbite and his big beautiful red comb is now black in places. Sad.)

They should have roundish dark eye and light pink, greyish white sole to foot. the australorps is called the great bird of curves, he should curve from tip of nose to tip of tail , long neck , only difference from black australorps is feather coior.

Hey all! Sorry for being MIA. I have been super busy around here and the weather has not been helping my health out much. I hope all is going well with everyone. I wanted to give a quick update on my needing an Australorp rooster. I finally found the most beautiful Australorp rooster from a local guy here. He was actually selling hens for meat but I just took a chance and gave him a call to see if he had any roosters available and he had two but he was not really looking to sell either of them but I offered him $15 for one of them and that was a great persuading tool.

I did not expect that he would be as beautiful as he is and I am so in love with this rooster. He was a little aggressive the first few days but after a week of babying him, hand feeding him and forcing him to be held by myself and my sons he has totally turned around and is just a big sweetheart. Here are a few pictures of him that I took this morning.

The boys named him Oscar. I tried to get a few with just him but the girls just hover over me so much it is pretty difficult to get those single pictures.

Here he is with one of the Australorp hens from the first set of chicks I got back in October.

I got him in the middle of a crow in this picture. He is just so huge and sparkles all over.

Crowing for the pictures.

I love this picture because it really shows off the green in his feathers in this pose.

This is his Fabio pose, he really does think he is the cat's meow.

Here he is with the SLW hens, they stick to him like glue. They are going to be so heart-broken when they are separated from him in the next few weeks.

Here are some pictures of my Australorp hens, they are around 16 weeks today and are already laying if you can believe that. At least I think they are the ones laying. I will not know for sure until I get them separated out into their own pen and house. I only had 17 laying adult hens and the last week and a half I have been getting 22 to 23 eggs a day. Which means that 6 hens from my first set of chicks has to be laying. I have 10 hens from that first batch and typically Golden-Laced Wyandottes do not start laying this early but I know Australorps have been known to start laying as early as 16 weeks old but it does not always happen.

Anyway, here are some pictures of some of my Australorp girls:

It is still hard to believe they are laying already but you cannot get two eggs a day from one hen, at least not on a consistent basis and since I check multiple times a day for eggs I know the extra eggs are not left over from the previous day and my Australorps and GLW are the only pullets old enough to be laying. I was curious if anyone else has had Australorps laying this early.

Ok so I am off for now but I wanted to give an update and thank everyone for all of the help you gave me when I was looking for a replacement rooster.
