Australorps breed Thread

Hi All. I'm new to Aussies. Got 11 chicks from tigercreek a week and a half ago. They are adorable.

One thing I've noticed is they are very vocal. Constantly chattering to one another. The dark faced ones act more like little roos than the white faced ones. It will be interesting to see how they grow out. Mostly I've hatched and raised BOs.

Constant chattering means they are all females!!

Well I was hoping I'd get as least on roo. But on second thought a roo from a different line would be a better idea.

Beautiful birds! I am a complete newbie here, trying to decide whether to buy 5 (the maximum allowed in my town) Black Australorps, 5 Silver Laced Wyandottes, or maybe 5 Ameracaunas. I want beautiful hens with a high egg laying capability, acceptable as an eating/meat bird when they are done laying, social and friendly and easy to keep.

In the reading I've done I keep seeing that Black Australorps are great chickens, hardy, good layers, and really pretty. Are there other reasons you think I should go with Black Australorps as my final choice? This looks like the right place to discuss the qualities and negatives of that breed!

There also really sweet and docile. I have a australorp rooster and two hens there so so sweet.

you cant beat the winter egg laying of Australorps..we have had many different breeds at different times sometimes overlapping..the australorps out preformed the others in winter with reasonable care and with no lighting, they do slow down during darkest part of winter but over all the are the best..they do go broody which if you intend to breed any can be a bennie..but other than that they are a nice breed to own.

I'll second that. Go with the Aussies. They are the best out of my mixed flock of RIR, BR, Wellys,Marans, and EE's. That is why I decided to only breed BA's.

In addition to all of the reasons to get them already posted, they are also known as stealth chickens. They are quiet hens. One person said they had Australorps for more than a year and the neighbors did not find out they had them until the trees were cut back and the coop became visible.

Get the Australorps--you won't be sorry.

. I got 11 aussie chicks from tigercreek and they are the chattiest chicks I've ever had. They constantly talk quietly to one another. I live in a very rural area so it doesn't matter. I got them for the same reasons you posted. Best of Luck with whatever you decide.
