Australorps breed Thread

I posted the idea that I have two Australorp hens that are sporting the chocolate color. Has anyone ran across this? I will try to get some pictures today of comparison of my black Australorp and the two chocolates.
Howdy, are you breeding for Blues? what are you using to breed your australorps with?
Another option that I can ask is , how old are your hens?
I have had older hens that have not moulted and the plumage turns brown, then once they do moult, they regain beautiful beetle green feathers again. have they ever moulted?

I made my decision of which rooster to keep from tigercreeks chicks. I actually had 4 to pick from cause I have a late bloomer. IMO this is the one that looks the best. He is 17 weeks old today. What are your thoughts?

I still haven't picked a name for him but it's gonna be something awesome.

I am world famous for hatching a box of roosters...last year i thought I had 5 pullets as blk orps often have very short combs for a long time..nope , it was 5 cockerals and 1 pullet....finnaly have very good group of aussies brewing, had terrible hens in the past..the offspring just couldnt live up to the better parent...and the 2 very good hens that I had rejected the rooster...but bought 2 doz from a show barn in mass..much bigger better birds so will see what the future holds..
Hey Aveca!

We talked about aussies some last year.............where was that 'show barn' in MA, btw.........?

That is a nice cockerel! when he fills out he should be outstanding! nice pick! FYI we always keep an extra male, just incase of Murphy's Law.
Last year We culled and saved only one Blue Australorp Cockerel, he was the best in the flock, we sold the other blues, "Who needs them?" ........Well he contracted some wild bird parasite and I had to put him down. He had the last of a special line of birds I had already sold the previous year, if i would have kept his brother who wasnt too far away from being quite good, we could of at least did some serious breeding this year.........BUT NO! we have to wait now until our younger birds mature and wait yet another year for results. Anyway, just thought I'd run that experience by you, never hurts to have a back up!

hey jmc, i will get the addy for that mass barn as soon as i get throu inspection..tiger creek has some outstanding birds..the hens are wonderful too..

Thanks huppfarm, I had already planned on that. Been there, done that, ain't gonna do it again. LOL His brothers look exactly like him. He's just a tad bigger. The late bloomer has a smaller comb but he hasn't had it that long. I have six of stan's pullets. I lost one due to a leg injury. Do you think two roos would be to much. They are in a 12x12 stall with a 15x20 ft run.

They will eventually do some fighting over the command of the girls, I have to keep my males in separate pens to elimnate fighting, breeding and tearing up the hens. unless you have those chicken back protectors, your girls will be bred daily and their backs will become a mess, you already know that.
If left all in one pen, One male will be dominant over the other and ruin the confidence of the lesser male creating a submissive bird that wont have much desire to mate due to the fact of constantly being beaten down. So I recommend separation. If you plan on breeding them, I would keep away from breeding brothes to sisters, that creates smaller birds and genetic defects. You can line breed with mother to son and father to daughter but that is as close to banjo playing as you want to be :)

thanks, kiddo!

don't knock yourself out, really. It was more just a 'hmmmm'/ 'curious' question. I think I would really need reliable good layers, as distinct from true APA boids...............

He is one handsome boy! Love that tail. I am not used to these "fancy" chickens, but I was wondering if his back was extra long. Is that just because he is young and has not filled out, or have I been looking at too many Orpingtons?
