Hi guys, I was thinking if my Dad will let me that the next time my hen goes broody (She does it a LOT) I could get some fertile Australorp eggs from a friend and hatch some breeding stock! Can you raise BBS Australorps with just ordinary show quality Australorps? Or do you need special BBS stock. I could get a mixture of blue and black Australorp eggs, I plan to buy a dozen and keep 4 chicks. A male and female blue pair, and a male and female black pair. Or maybe just a blue pair if I can get BBS. So any tips to encourage a hen to go broody? And can you breed BBS out of any Australorp? Remember, this will only happen if my Dad lets me get the eggs. (My Mum is totally OKAY with lots of chickens, but my Dad hates them) I am going to try building a pen to get the girls on Dad's good side. And let them out to range during the school week when he is at work so he doesn't know they are out. What do you think my chances of this happening will be? I am guessing if my Dad can't really see, hear or smell the chickens, he wouldn't care less. Also it won't be making an indention on his wallet because I am paying for it. Hope to get some answers and wish me luck!

I'm not actually sure what you're asking. If you have black australorps, you need to bring in a bird or eggs with the genetics for blue in order to get BBS and you can raise those birds with your flock.

You're also paying for the lumber, nails, hinges, wire, roofing to build the pen, the feed and water pans, the feed, and unexpected expenses? If you are, good for you. If not, don't lie to yourself. Draw up a budget.

A male and female blue pair, and a male and female black pair. Or maybe just a blue pair if I can get BBS....I want to breed a pair of Splash Australorps, male and female.

I would not keep a breed with roosters that large in pairs. Unless you're setting up breeding pens with at least five hens each, it probably wouldn't work out anyway. If you can do this, think about keeping only your best looking blue or splash cockerel to breed with all of the hens. Many people on BYC are pretty good at judging chickens, so you could post pictures if you weren't sure which one was best, and have someone judge them.

Good luck.

We already have 8 girls and quite a large coop which was my birthday present as we needed an upgrade and we have a junk pile full of things to make a pen from. And from what you said I can do BBS!! :woot

Yes, you may have enough girls for one roo, but the current hens that you have now are cross breed's, not pure. To be able to breed the pure B/B/S Australorp's, you have to have your whole flock as pure (all Australorps).
