Auto waterer project - $4.99

You can try tapping the nipple to get the water to drip. They will see the water and peck at it. All you need is one or two birds to figure it out. The others will copy them.

When mine went out to the coop I kept their regular waterer out there and then hung the bucket with the poultry nipples. One came over to check it out, pecked at that interesting little red thing, and water came out! They all flocked over to see what she was doing - training time over! They all used it immediately, the dirty poop and litter collecting waterer came out, and we've never looked back.

Very first half hour that the waterer was out there.

I made another waterer using automatic watering cups. I'll post that one later. I put one in a tractor, and just like Blooie said, one pecked at it, got water, and the rest just flocked to it.

That part used on that one is on this page it's part #4085. Just hit Ctrl-F and search for 4085 to find it. I have made several buckets with these and even sold them @ Jacob's Cave. When I get the float valves, I'm going to modify one to make it fully automatic. Will post pictures when I'm done.

I cant believe the chickens get enough water with the drip...............they must not be heavy drinkers???

But.......I'm gonna try it for my 12 birds.

Next, is how to keep water from freezing in winter?......but that's a ways away.

Well, I have 22 of them and they use it exclusively...nobody sick or dehydrated, so I'm happy and they're happy. Winter will be the real test! Like you I'm a little concerned about that but I'm a determined little booger - if there's a way I'll find it! (or grovel on BYC until someone takes pity upon me and lets me in on the secret!)

Do You think a heater for a Fish Tank will Work??

I have one I thought putting it in cold water to see if it will warm the water. I have tried the drinking cups ,I got the water nipples at TSC but haven't tried them yet.

Someone I respect very much, Beekissed, uses the water cups. Actually she uses both the vertical nipples for chicks, and the cups. She said when she takes a bucket of warmer water out and fills the container, the nipples in the cup system thaw almost immediately. I've seen where others have used aquarium heaters but I have absolutely zero experience with that. I'm sure someone will chime in, though, and I'll be watching too. My dad used to tell us, "Be smart enough to know how smart you ain't...then you're ready to get an education."
