You can try tapping the nipple to get the water to drip. They will see the water and peck at it. All you need is one or two birds to figure it out. The others will copy them.

Well, I have 22 of them and they use it exclusively...nobody sick or dehydrated, so I'm happy and they're happy. Winter will be the real test! Like you I'm a little concerned about that but I'm a determined little booger - if there's a way I'll find it! (or grovel on BYC until someone takes pity upon me and lets me in on the secret!)I cant believe the chickens get enough water with the drip...............they must not be heavy drinkers???
But.......I'm gonna try it for my 12 birds.
Next, is how to keep water from freezing in winter?......but that's a ways away.

Someone I respect very much, Beekissed, uses the water cups. Actually she uses both the vertical nipples for chicks, and the cups. She said when she takes a bucket of warmer water out and fills the container, the nipples in the cup system thaw almost immediately. I've seen where others have used aquarium heaters but I have absolutely zero experience with that. I'm sure someone will chime in, though, and I'll be watching too. My dad used to tell us, "Be smart enough to know how smart you ain't...then you're ready to get an education."Do You think a heater for a Fish Tank will Work??I have one I thought putting it in cold water to see if it will warm the water. I have tried the drinking cups ,I got the water nipples at TSC but haven't tried them yet.![]()
