Automatic feeder

My four black australorp hens spend most of their time in the 18x6 foot run. The run's floor is white sand. I have a new automatic feeder with a timer that spreads feed on a twice a day basis. Here's the question: Will my 8-week old babies adjust to being fed by the feeder, and will there be too much wasted food in the sand?

If they are hungry, they will eat it. For a different scenario, my chickens will sometimes spray food all over the run from their trough feeder and let it sit there because they prefer to eat from the trough. If they only have food on the ground, they will eat it.
