I am sorry Lizz but I really haven't the faintest idea what you are angry or frustrated with me about. I would appreciate being told, though, since it might be something I'd like to know to avoid in future, eh?
In the really hot and humid weather we get here, like temperature and humidity both in the upper 90s, we have our vents and our windows open 24/7. We do get wild swings in the weather in the spring and fall, where we need to open or close the windows. It's not a big deal. On the other hand, we do have an automatic vent on the second story of our chicken tractor. My plans didn't call for an automatic vent. Or a second story. My husband was feeling creative and impulsive during one of his trips to Home Depot.
I don't think most people, living most places, need to adjust their coop openings all that often. There's also nothing wrong with automating anything and everything on a coop. Some things a person in a particular situation might need, that most people don't. Other things are just because you want to do it. Maybe it's one less thing to worry about in a busy life. Maybe it's just cool. Chicken keeping can be as cheap, expensive, easy, hard, low tech or high tech as you want it to be.
What the chickens need, what you need and what you want are all very different things.
I need to ask a ? on closing vents in the winter. My DH used a thing that attaches to the drill and you use it for putting in door knobs, he cut some hole up high in the coop walls and we covered it with hardware cloth, we never put any kind of cover over them to close them in the winter, should we so that they could be closed or adjusted to control the venting and/or cold air coming into the coop.

WELL , you asked , so here goes . Mostly its the sarcaism that I pick up on as easily as alot of people on here . JUST because we are NOT from " CANADA " don't make any of us dummy's .
2nd. You compare what you do and what you need and what you have and want in CANADA to what people here need , have and want in the South or Deep South .
Advice is mostly always welcomed , BUT sarcasim ? NEVER .

Lizz, I don't know what you're intepreting as sarcasm but I assure you that the most I ever intend is humor and/or just a casual way of speaking.
I am sorry I don't talk the way you'd like me to, but that's not something I can really do much about.
Plus, I am not "from" Canada anyhow...
(That is meant as an amused or wry expression, not sarcasm)

Lizz, I grew up outside Philadelphia, then lived in DE for 4 years, NC (outside Raleigh) for 6 yrs, outside Cincinnati OH for 3 years, central NJ for 3 years, and western NY state for 5 years before moving to Canada 7 years ago. I have also travelled a reasonable bit around the rest of the U.S. during all that.
The only time I mention Canada in posts is when issues about wintertime come up, because there are not all that many parts of the States (although there are some) that get winters harsher than here, and thus if something is adequate for the cold part of the year here, it will certainly be adequate in most other places. (Although, this is one of the warmer parts of Canada.) I don't know why that bothers you but it really isn't meant as a personal insult of any sort (and that's a JOKE, not sarcasm). And nobody is forcing you to read my posts.
Regards (which where I'm from is a form of POLITENESS not sarcasm),
Pat, perfectly capable of sarcasm but believe me these ain't it.
Pat,
You said nothing wrong. You were not the one to even bring up Canada here. Clearly Lizz just has an issue. Thank you for your input on this site. I am very happy hearing about your experiences. I thought your initial post was written perfectly. An automatic vent is not something that many people need. It is nice though for glowworm to inform people of them.
Pat,
I'm sorry I brought up Canada. I should have said "a colder place" to avoid any problems.
My point was different climates call for different measures. There can be some huge temperature swings here in the Fall and Spring between night and day. I guess I didn't realize it was okay to let the chickens get that cold and drafty.
