Autumn

Thank you.. My chicks are about 3.5 weeks old. I have them on starter grower feed. My question is, should I start giving them some grit or is that already in their feed?
Grit is not in chick feed.
They are old enough to be offered chick grit.
Do not mix it in with their feed. Provide it in a separate dish.
A great way to start exposing your chicks to their ultimate environment is to offer then a chunk of sod from your yard. They will love it. They can get a little grit from the sod chunk but it is best they have a small dish of chick grit available to them before they are offered anything other than their chick starter.

When do you start clipping wings. Mine are already trying to fly at 3.5 weeks of age. Do I clip them now or wait till their older?
Wing clipping is a personal choice. I've chosen not to clip as it takes away their ability to evade predators, but it also gives them the ability to go places they shouldn't.

I had to clip my chickens wings to keep them in their 1/4-acre electronetted pen. They had been accustomed to free ranging and were getting into trouble. One of my girls was killed by the neighbors dog after she flew out of the pen. Now that they've gotten used to it, no one charges the gates or attempts to fly out any longer and I think they will be allowed their to keep their new wing feathers when they molt them in this fall.
I would not just arbitrarily clip their wings without a good reason to do so.
