Does it help to throw unused kale,chard leaves; squash peels; grass clippings etc etc into the outside chicken yard? If OK then what NOT to give them. I'm not talking exclusively feeding this stuff. Just as an added treat. I think I remember my grandmother saving biodegradable and throwing it to the chickens.

I think it is really helpful to toss that to the chickens, as long as they are getting plenty of protein as part of their daily diet. There is a list of things chickens should not eat on this page: http://www.fresheggsdaily.com/2013/02/toxic-treats-what-not-to-feed-your.html

Mine get lots of chicken scraps, but I also give them some higher protein food to offset the low-protein treats.
