Hello! We have 9 chicks of different breeds and we weighed them yesterday when they were exactly 1 week old. I am just wondering if their weights are normal? They are different sizes since they are different breeds, but I just need to know if they are good for their breed:

Bantam Brahma: 40 grams

Polish: 42 grams

bantam frizzle cochin: 35 grams

Bantam cochin: 29 grams

Both bantam Silkies: 30 grams

Easter egger: 63 grams

Orpington: 54 grams

Mille Fleur D'uccle bantam: 27 grams

Thanks! (I will update in 1 week to show their growth to see if it is normal :) )

Hello? Does anyone know if these weights are normal? I can't find average 1 week old chick weights anywhere so that is why I am asking. How much do your week old chicks weigh?

Hello! Just writing to say that I don't think people are ignoring you, just that this isn't too common of a practice for the average backyard keeper. It's really interesting, though! I've never even thought about their weights. I just have a feel for how big they should be. Plus, my scale doesn't start weighing until 1lb  It would have to be a monster baby!

Thanks for the reply! That makes sense that it isn't super common, maybe I'm just super paranoid since this is my first time owning chickens! I will just make sure they have gained weight when I weigh them next week.

I use a kitchen scale I have on hand which will do grams... a 1lb chick would be a monster baby, it would be SO cute! I can tell my chicks are getting bigger though! Thank you :)

If you take pics of them like 2 or three at a time, then we can probably tell you if they're looking good or not.

Generally speaking, if a chick is eating, drinking, and playing 'chick games' like chase, then they are healthy. Watch their butts for pasty butt and make sure noone is lethargic.

I got a pic of them playing with a mirror toy, it's of the EE, Mille Fleur, Cochin, Brahma, and Orpington (I can send more pics if you need them):

The chicks are all eating, drinking, and playing and all of them have normal poops. Only one of our chicks have gotten pasty butt and it was during shipping, and that chick sadly passed away. But the rest of the chicks look great and their feathers are growing in (the EE has the most feathers- the one looking in the mirrior).
Tell me if they look good or not!

What you've described are healthy chicks. They look super cute and normal to me! Give them space in the brooder to be in or away from the heat. Watch the bigger two with the bantams and be sure they aren't steamrolling them.

Our chicks are now 4 weeks and 4 days old, and they are growing well (sorry I forgot about updating sooner). They are growing lots of new feathers and will be moving to their coop soon! Here are their weights (they were weighed on Monday):

Bantam Brahma: 190 grams

Polish: 201 grams

bantam frizzle cochin: 155 grams

Bantam cochin: 142 grams

blue silkie: 102 grams

white silkie: 120 grams

Easter egger: 281 grams (she is really big compared to all the other chicks)

Orpington: 242 grams

Mille Fleur D'uccle bantam: 120 grams

They are all super active and seem healthy, I will update their weights again soon :)
