Average Life Span?

I almost got RIR...I probably should of...I got two silkies instead, but the RIR sounds more like what I was looking for...everyone on here made the silkies sound sooo appealing, but I'm really LOVING my buff orpington best and my barred rock next, I'm guessing the silkies will grow on me eventually, but a RIR might of won my heart a little sooner???

Our oldest chicken is barred rock, game mix called Oscar (for Oscar the grouch) He is about 14, he just showed up one day under a bird feeder in the back yard, we always figured somebody was going to fight him or use him for fighting training as he was freshly and completely dubbed. He is retired now and has a couple of his older and favorite hens to keep him company. He deosn't mate much, rarely crows, gets around just fine - scratches and still calls his hens when he finds something good. I hope he is with us a long time to come.

Mine die of old age. I let them retire gracefully for their service. They also teach the youngster the ropes.

My Speckled Sussex, Estelle lived to be a ripe old age. She got a little senile near the end but laid me a egg now and then.

its horrible because i have no say as to whether or not we cull old egg layers
