Avian Flu & Guineas

Then I thought about the possibility that I could get AI from breathing the air of heavily infected birds and transmit to my family… not to mention my neighbors with chickens of their own.

Thankfully its not airborne! They would need direct contact w shared food/water sources or be exposed directly to feces. So if you can pen up your ducks and chickens, and add a cover, you really should be fine. And human transmission is really difficult in a backyard flock. Its usually transmitted in packed poultry facilities with both sick people and sick chickens passing germs back and forth. I don't think I've seen any mention of this particular strain affecting humans.

Mine recently got a taste of playing outside their run, so its sad to see them by the door for the new experience they just loved! Had i known this was coming, i wouldn't have given them a taste of freedom.

OMG - speaking of pics, in these troubling times we NEED a pic of Numi cuddling with your Sheltie! Sounds so sweet! As for dividing, ugh I don’t want to go there! They are all just so darn feisty right now. Cock Zinfindale is really getting chased by the older cocks. Poor Surplice gets chased by everyone, including by Zinfindale. I do have plans this weekend to add more perches to the run and coop. I think that will help because it’s the bullied ones that like the perches best. I need to rig up a high feeder too, but then I’m worried it will make perches more “A list” territory then the bullied birds won’t be able to get up there without getting chased? I dunno. Maybe I’ll just add a third ground feeder and try to sprinkle some feed along perch rails like I did today. I need some toys or something else to keep them entertained. Any ideas?
Message from Numi: "having a blast hanging out on the porch- tin /metal buckets that I can't tip over or see in make me very curious..I love pecking on it. I also found some low hanging windchimes mom has hanging from a standing planter - def want some of these for my new digs!" download (2).jpeg

Just wanted to check in with anyone else who has confined their guineas due to HPAI. How’s it going for you? I still have mine confined, which has given me the benefit of getting them used to the coop nests. So far it looks like it’s the young girls laying, as eggs are small and most are scattered on the floor. I spent some time in their coop and run yesterday trying to get a sense of whether any were really struggling with confinement. I was most worried about Surplice, the immature looking hen who tries to roost outside the run when free ranging because she gets picked on. She’s not super happy but looks like she’s getting the hang of how to get food and water when their are so many aggressive birds around. The one I’m more worried about now is Zinfindale, a pied purple young cock. He has some missing back feathers and looks like he’s lost weight. He also seemed very nervous and is getting pecked by the other cocks. I tried to give him some mealworms, but he’s terrified of me too. I managed to get him off the roosts and into the run and he got a little feed last night, but he’s certainly struggling with confinement. How are everyone else’s birds doing?

@Mixed flock enthusiast - still looking for diversions? Obviously we don't give goons tablescraps, etc., but I wonder if you could incorporate the idea? Not sure if you have a dustbath inside, mine will have a 4'x8' box inside the run when finished. But before, they've just had a baby pool.
