I would like to do a Q&A type post at some point and gather it all together in one posting because I have spread a lot of info on a few different threads,,, maybe use yours if you don't mind,, johns thread tends to get overrun because of the hype and media sensation with what he went through and the info tends to get buried there

That would be a great idea. I know that a lot of folks here get scared about the flu we need some sound facts and advice. Yes, use my post if you want that would be great.

Then everyone can find the thread easily.

Ok, I have been doing some thinking since I stated this thread.

If those that are only getting bird flu have direct contact with infected poultry, dosen't that
include backyard chicken owners?

Is it enough to just hold a bird that has the flu or do you have to be slaughtering it to get the flu?

I guess I am looking for an answer on in that aspect. If my birds get sick does just holding the bird
predispose me to getting sick or do I have to make it bleed all over me to get sick?

What about cleaning the coop? It is transmitted by poop. Does that mean that if my birds get
sick that cleaning the coop could also predispose me to getting it?

I am just so scared of this, I am starting to question owning chickens. Maybe I am taking it to far, I don't know.

NONE of the strains in the USA right now have transferred to humans.

That does not mean it is not possible that one of the strains won't mutate to a strain that can infect humans. That is the reason for destroying any infected flocks immediately.

95% of infected birds have been factory-farmed poultry, in conditions so filthy that workers are practically swimming in feces, yet none of them have been infected.
The likelihood of your flock being infected is EXTREMELY low. The risk of you you being infected is almost non-existent.
You are more likely to get salmonella from your birds than AI. Wear a mask and wash your hands well to calm your nerves, but I promise, you will be okay! lol

that is true. I guess culling infected flocks does reduce that risk.

Tell me this. Are you all free ranging you flocks? I am not sure what to do about that.
I want to free range them but I am afraid that it will make them more suspetible to contracting the flu.
