Avian influenza found in South Carolina

Honestly at this point I figure that I'll just check the invoice against the resulting chicks. If they don't have something that i ordered in the box, I'll assume it was affected and not be irritated like I usually am with the substitutes
However, (I assume so, but we'll you know what they say about assuming), I wonder if people will be refunded for the affected breeds they ordered

Holy crap. I am almost in tears. I cannot believe how horrible this is. Here are the breeds showing as unavailable for the rest of the year at McMurray. Cockerels also, which makes me think they are part of the affected breeding stock. A few popular breeds always have roosters available.

All of their straight run breeds are sold out also, but they have low availability of those so it might not be related.

I did not check Bantams, but I would guess any top hat or feather feet would have been at the same breeder site. Wow. I’m speechless. How terrible. 😞

Oh shoot. I may have birds missing then from my order. I know at least the white laced Cornish were in there

Here in Washington County, Maine, we've had a case less than 25 miles from me. I've got my birds under cover and on lockdown but the word is slow to reach my neighbors.
The disease infected a flock in the next county over; this weekend, while we were out planning to expand our run (by the way—once that is done, should we somehow sanitize the earth before letting the flock in there?), we could see our new neighbors' flock roaming around. At least they have not come over here again, though since our dog chased the rooster back to his place and our birds have been locked up for at least the past couple of weeks, not so much temptation.

I will say that just about everyone else in the area we drive by has their birds locked down and under as much cover as they can give.

Perhaps some folks are still unaware of what is going on.

See this. It depends on the viral load and type type of soil (and also likely the temperature, the virus lives longer in cooler temps). If you are worried about the odd stray poop from a songbird the risk is likely nil.

That study is very interesting, intuitively logical, and somewhat reassuring.
But it makes contamination of a place like Murray McMurray even more puzzling. Presumably their flock aren’t outside mixing it up with the local geese. Their breeders are most likely kept in covered barns and the disease must have been brought in from outside (vehicles, shoes, feed etc. as others have posted).
So either you need pretty close exposure to a heavy load as the study found, or a speck of goose poop on a show can decimate a flock.
And now I don’t know which it is and therefore how much to alter my flock keeping practices (no cases yet reported Betsy close to me).

I found THIS. I don't think it would be feasible to use them as a preventative and would likely be hard to get most of the disinfectants on the list. But in a worst case situation, I'm sure most of us would like to rebound as quickly as possible.
Very helpful! Thank you. I used Lysol on the little poops whenever I found a tiny bird stuck in my Serama and Dutch coop. This was early on in this spread. I have Oxine AH and several packs of activator as well. Those were listed on the first couple of pages. Will go through and find other sources for the area around my pond and possibly the pond if there are any options for treating that just in case. Thanks again!
