Avian influenza found in South Carolina

This is difficult for me to agree with:
“ventilation shutdown,” which means shutting off a facility’s ventilation system and slowly suffocating conscious birds to death
Unfortunately, I didn't see anything in the article that said that would change. There literally was nothing in that article that indicated any better living or culling conditions for the existing flocks.

I don't think I've heard of the suffocation thing before. I thought they filled the building with some sort of foam that kills them? Maybe the foam just suffocates?

They will use ventilation shutdown with another method in what they define as constrained circumstances but not alone as the only method of depopulation.

"When no other preferred or alternative methods can be implemented to meet the 24-48 depopulation goal, the AVMA Depopulation Guidelines permits Ventilation Shutdown Plus (+) in constrained circumstances. This policy is further elaborated in the HPAI Response: Ventilation Shutdown Plus (+) Policy, posted at www.aphis.usda.gov/fadprep. "

"The AVMA defines VSD Plus (+) as the addition of CO2 and/or an increase in the heat within the houses with a goal of 100% mortality rate in as short of time as possible."

"The USDA notes the use of CO2 in depopulation provides additional health and safety
considerations for responders performing field operations. In the event VSD Plus (+) is
used alone without CO2, USDA recommends adding heat to achieve a minimum
temperature of 104°F to 110°F as quickly as possible and preferably within 30 minutes, for
a minimum of three hours."

Yes, I read that as well.
