I am a bird keeper at a zoo, and I adore pheasants. I've worked with many exotics, but for the first time ever I have a backyard - with chickens! It's very exciting to raise my own domestic galliformes as pets and feels like a whole different realm. I'm starting with Buff Silkies and Blue Ameraucanas. When I can move to an area that allows roosters I'd love to breed heritage breeds. My chicks are getting lots of training and at 3 weeks old can already station and step up on a scale on cue. I love how intelligent and food-motivated chickens are - we're going to have lots of fun learning all sorts of tricks!

What zoo do you work at?

Welcome! Very long ago, I visited Knotts Berry Farm in California, and watched chickens being trained to do tricks, using an automatic feeder cup and operant conditioning.
My chickens are fun to watch, and do learn new things daily, although I'm not motivated to actually train tricks, or useful behaviors like getting on a scale.
Good work!

G'Day from down under Caracal :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.
