Aviary floors

I brought some cheap mulch before and the dye came off onto my goats turned me off of colored mulch.. From what I calculated, it’s 47-50 for a truckload of sand vs 35 or so bags at 3.50-4.50 each. So going to save a lot with the truckload. And I have to clear my walkway for the wheelbarrow but it shouldn’t be to bad. I’m still considering adding a lime base first and now I also may need to consider lining the bottom with another 2x4 for depth
i have used the undyed cypress mulch before as well

we till/turn the aviary ground every 6-8 weeks and freshen the base as needed but how often it needs to be done is somewhat dependent on the number and type of birds that you have. the base on my smaller aviary is 2x6.

I don’t plan to go over 30-50 birds but with how much quail poop that turn and till don’t sound too good my neighbors would kill me lol
