awful video of what they do with roosters ****WARNING GRAPHIC****

Thanks Miss Prissy, If we eat chicken we should raise our own humanely and kill them humanely. Sorry to the people the film offended, but if you are eating supermarket chicken and eggs you are contributing to the industry. IMHO, we all need to take more responsibility for the meat we eat.

Anytime I see an animal gasping for air, struggling to breathe, I say they are suffering. The visual evidence does show that they 'pass out' or 'go to sleep', but not immediately. They suffer some first. Would you suffer if you were deprived of air? Granted, we as humans are vastly more advanced in intelligence, but would you then say that a severely mentally handicapped person would not suffer if deprived of oxygen? (Probably not the best example to give, but ...)

"Defining what is humane is not difficult" when we are the ones doing the defining, and also the ones doing the killing.

Also, if I wanted "my meat and eggs as cheap as possible", regardless of the cost in wasted animal life, I certainly wouldn't be raising my own. Haven't saved a dime yet.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, and I to mine.
I see your point, this is a more humane way than some others, but I disagree on how painless in is.

I don't desire to offend you or anyone else, just my opinion.

How do people know who is big, small, or "humane"? With the Internet it all looks the same.

If their website has a huge warehouse on it and they offer more than a few breeds they are a big commercial producer.

I guess I don't understand what is going on there...my speakers are out so I couldn't hear it and I didn't finish watching it...I just couldn't.......

There is lot more to the bigger issues of themeat industry and we all would benefit from better educating ourselves. More of us need to remove our family table from the commercial meat industry. We might find our children are far more healthy and have a better respect for the life given for the food they eat.

Miss Prissy...I TOTALLY agree with this! We have agreed as a family AFTER seeing what happens at these factories to buy only from local farmers. Same goes for our beef...we will only buy from farmers who will allow us to come in and see their farm and how their cattle are treated. There is an AWESOME chicken farm near us who respect their chickens and allow us to come in to see how they are treated/raised before taken to be butchered...everyone is free ranged and happy/healthy! It sure does make for a MUCH better family meal knowing we do not put any more money in the pockets of those awful chicken factory's or Cafo's (Concentrated animal feeding operation). Very good point you made!

I get tired of hearing people malign this nations meat and poultry industries. They have done a wonderful job of supplying millions of people with high protien good food. My hat is off to them. Are home grown eggs and meat better? -You bet, but for the millions of folks in the cities you can't beat the cheap, wholesome food those industries have supplied us with.

All I have to say to this is visit a Cafo in your area.

You have an excellent point, greggy. I do belive they are filling a purpose for many millions of Americans.

I have always said Americans have gotten too far removed from their food sources and that the dispatching in most any manner is seen as cruel and violent. I can't figure out how people think the meat in the tidy clean meat trays gets in the store. It has to be out of sight out of mind for most people.

If we educate ourselves we can make a knowledgable choice to eat the commercial meat or a more humainly grown meat source. Not everyone can grow their own meats but they can support small enterprises and the family farms that try to provide a clean and humainly treated meat item.

Coming face to face with the reality of commercial meat production might make people stop and think the next time they prepare and sit down and eat a chicken dinner from the commercially produced poultry houses. They just might seek out a small farmer and support him by buying his meats and produce and eggs.

What "a wonderful job" is depends on your perception of food animal welfare. 6 hens to a battery cage with the beak burned off doesn't meet my expectations for acceptable animal welfare. If your primary concern is that food is plentiful and cheap, then feel free to buy whatever you want at the supermarket. Too many people have no idea how an animal ends up on their dinner plate. Some would be bothered by how animals are raised and slaughtered.

The most important thing is that every consumer is familiar with facts that let them make their own decisions about what industries they comfortably support.

Edited to add:
It's not necessarily the industry that is wrong, so much as consumers who reluctantly support it. It puppy mills upset you, don't buy from a pet store. If battery hens bother you, then get free run/range. If food animal slaughter bothers you, see what meatless 'meats' taste like. The worst thing for a person to do is turn away and block out what hits them as morally wrong, without changing their own habits
