I like this breed, but they go broody, are not real friendly, eggs are small and they don't lay many of them.

The plus? I like their smaller size, their color, their rare status, they are good moms. I plan on keeping what I have, breeding them for me, but not buying any more, chicks/eggs.

I have black frizzles, I plan on breeding with the AC it may be neat to see frizzles with that black on black look.

Her temperament isn’t mean, but she is really skittish. I wouldn’t get anymore for that reason. If she gets broody AND is skittish? Yeah. I hope she doesn’t get worse.

I have one adult AC she was always skiddish, one 1/2 AC thinks of nothing but hatching eggs, and 2 young AC roo and hen, they are mellow though, but not warm and fuzzy. SS are the friendliest.

PHENOTYPE INTRODUCTION.​

The Ayam Cemani chicken breed hails from Indonesia (Maritime Southeast Asia). Direct importation from Indonesia is prohibited, therefore Greenfire Farms, the only verified legal importer of the breed, obtained its breeding stock from the Netherlands.

There are three phenotype possibilities for the Ayam Cemani here in the United States. The 1) "Indonesian" Phenotype, 2) the "European" Phenotype, and 3) the "American" Variety.


"American" Cemani are known to have color bleed and other unexpected/undesired qualities. This is indicative of recent cross breeding/hybridization of the "American" Cemani making it less desirable for people looking for the best possible phenotype expression from their birds.

I’m only updating this old thread because I saw that I had posted on it long ago and mentioned that I was using my birds for a side project. I actually DID manage to get better quality birds from my lesser quality stock but I got rid of them anyway. I’ve been working on my project birds ever since and at this point are probably less than 3% Ayam Cemani but I like the results:
