Ayam Cemani or Svart Hona?

My friend was on Craigslist yesterday looking for the Ayam Cemani because he knows that’s one of my favorite chicken breeds, and found someone selling around 40 of them for $10 each. Being Craigslist, I know it’s not a company, so I’m a bit suspicious. I’d love to know how to tell the difference between Ayam or Svart chicks before I go ahead with the purchase.

According to what I've read, the chicks are nearly impossible to tell apart, but as adults, the Svart Hona has a greenish colored comb when in direct sunlight... Otherwise, the Svart Hona and Ayam Cemani just came from different countries :idunno

Okay, thanks! I guess $10 is worth the risk? 50/50 chance of either one, and I’d like to believe that most people in the world wouldn’t lie =)
But whatever I get, I will love them, so even if it ends up being the Svart, it’s not much different than if I got something completely different.

Personally, I think 10$ is well worth it, but it's your money so it's completely up to you :)
Good luck!! Post pictures if you get any! :D

Since I feel the chick-pics won’t be of much help, haha, they do show what I believe to be the parents. It’s hard to tell what they look like, but I believe they look like Ayam Cemani’s? I’m still on edge a little, because again, Craigslist. But thank you for the info =) I will definitely buy them, unless someone proves them to be the Svart, though I will take a 50/50

https://greenfirefarms.com/swedish_black_hen.html This was a good read. They say Svart Honas are more cold hardy vs Ayam Cemanis. Some say the Ayam Cemani has a more "Gamefowl" body type.
If the person who is selling the chicks lets you, it might be wise to look at the chicks' parents in person and make your decision. :)

I definitely will!
I have pictures of what I assume to be the parents, but it’s really difficult to see because of the fence (and why couldn’t the person get closer??)

Craigslist always makes me nervous. Maybe @Pyxis can give you some tips? She breeds Ayam Cemani.

Yeah, my friend uses CL a lot though, and doesn’t seem to have too much trouble. But when it comes to living things that you can easily scam someone with... uhh... yeah =P

But perhaps I will try and contact that person! Thanks for the help =D

So the parents look like they could be ACs to me, although the shot is taken at quite a distance - and I know why. Even at this distance you can see how red the roosters' wattles are.

So they do appear to have the gamier body type of ACs versus the SHs, but they're not very good quality. Which also explains the cheap price of the chicks.
