Hi everyone! In march we bought 7 chicks from a chain store/ retailer, one of which was a black silkie for our 5 yr old to do 4h with. Well this chicken looks nothing like a silkie now that it has grown! He/she is solid black except for a green and orange tint when the light catches it right. Black comb, waddle, eyes, feathers, legs! I've read that the Ayam cemani is a really rare bird. He/ she is 15 weeks old and we are fairly sure it's a roo, but we are new at owning chickens. Any thoughts on the breed and sex?

If you bought it from a chain retailer it is not an ayam cemani. It also looks like it has a lot of orange in the neck feathers. Do you have a full body picture? I'm thinking maybe a silkie mix. Does it have feathered legs? How many toes does it have?

He/she is really hard to get a picture of by itself! No feathered legs, solid black legs. 5 toes I think? Two of the shorter ones off the side of the leg/ foot and 3 main toes. Feathers are nothing like a silkie though

The extra toe is a silkie trait although it does happen in a few other breeds too, but it does not happen in ayam cemanis. My guess here would be that it's a silkie mix a few generations removed from the silkie. Very pretty bird!
