Ayam Cemani

(I emailed you yesterday) ;)
My cross birds came from a guy in Panama City, he said he had a few shipped in from somewhere(I think he said somewhere up north) that where 7/8 Cemani. He bred them together and kept the solid black hens and a BBR rooster.
I have 2 roosters and 3 hens. One rooster is dark BBR, the other is white/cream. My darkest hen has a gold collar(Like Lemon Black), and the other 2 are dark BBR. I also have one cockeral that looks like lemon black, like the one hen.
Id really like to have solid black birds, and it would be faster to get a solid black rooster to put over my hens. I do like the way the white rooter looks, his comb is purple, but I was thinking of putting him with my white lehorn hen to see what hatches.

Anyway, any thoughts on the source of all these half cemanis?

I haven't done any searching on this breed for about 7-8 months, but when I did look into it last year I came across Toni-Marie who I believe is the lady in Georgia that you are refering to. She has been breeding Cemanis since 2007 so I am sure others have be able to get them from her durring that time too.

I also came across a man who I belive was in Southern California with some "half-cemanis". It seems like he imported his or got them directly from someone who imported them. It seems like he had either a hen or a rooster that had the black comb, but the other gender had lots of the red color showing though on the comb. He was claiming that the one with the black comb was pure and the other was 1/2 cemanis. He was also claiming that his flock which I think was a pair or trio at the time were the only cemanis in the U.S.. Don't hold me to this since it is really hazy in my memory form 8 months back, but you asked for our thoughts. :)

I also came across several people who were isolating the fibro melanistic genes for psudo-Ceranis recreation projects. No doubt these recreations of all black birds are being called 1/2 Cemanis too just like any barred chickens is called a Plymouth Rock by the main stream poultry community, any chicken that lays blue or green eggs is called an Auracana by the main stream poultry community, any Red chicken is called a Rhode Island Red by the average chicken owner, etc. The bottom line is if they are saying it is a 1/2 Cemanis. I would NOT assume that there are pure Cermais out there just people are saying they have 1/2 Cemanis.

My thoughts are that there are probablly a few isolated flocks with some Cermanis blood in them in the U.S. that are kept by their owners as a novelty, but that are either not pure or not of a quality to be of much intrest to the rare breed fancier that is searching for pure Cermanis from long estabished blood lines.

I think a lot of these "half cemani" birds are just black mutts with black combs. It's like all the people that claim to own wolves. It's a wolf looking dog. That doesn't mean it's a wolf, or a half wolf.

This makes sense. Thanks.
