The earliest evidence of human settlement in the territory of Azerbaijan dates back to the late Stone Age and is related to theGuruchay culture of Azokh Cave.[50] The Upper Paleolithic and late Bronze Age cultures are attested in the caves of Tağılar,Damcılı, Zar, Yataq-yeri and in the necropolises of Leylatepe and Saraytepe.Abbasids and Seljuks,

Etymology Azerbaijan
According to a modern etymology, the name of Azerbaijan derives from that of Atropates, satrapunder the Achaemenid Empire, who was later reinstated as the satrap of Media under Alexander the Great The original etymology of this name is thought to have its roots in the once-dominant Zoroastrianism. In the Avesta,Atropatene."[40] The name "Atropates" itself is the Greek transliteration of an Old Median, compounded name with the meaning "Protected by the (Holy) Fire" or "The Land of the (Holy) Fire". In 1918, the government of Musavat adopted the name "Azerbaijan" for the newly established Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which was proclaimed on 27 May 1918 .Prior to the Russo -Gajar Turks wars of the 19th century, the Azerbaijani people were distributed throughout the north-westernGajar Empire, with the highest concentrations in Gajar provinces that correspond to contemporary Iranian Azerbaijan and the Republic of Azerbaijan. Following military defeats at the hands of the Russian Empire, Qajar Persiaceded all of its territories in the North Caucasus and Transcaucasia to Russia via the Treaty of Gulistan of 1813 and theTreaty of Turkmenchay of 1828.
