Aztec Ducks!

Pics
I thought the whole point of this breed was that they were not supposed to hatch like calls?
Their not supposed to, but they had been bred with calls for genetic reasons due to the number of the breed being so low. Sadly sometimes that means other traits like the hatching difficulty is there for a few generations.

May first two went from external pip two hatched in under 24 hours which is really good for ducks over all not to mention call ducks. The only thing I have done for assisting is a safety hole at this point. A little later tonight I will look every egg over again figure out where I should assist and who.

What Knightstar said. Hopefully a bit of outcrossing back to mallards will fix the issue. My mallard crosses hatched fine on their own. Those will be bred back to the Aztecs and we'll see how the resulting ducklings do with hatching.

Number 3 is here

still don’t think they are dry enough to till the color yet but they are darn cute.

Such cool ducks , were do you think
I could get some ?

There aren't a lot of places you could get them right now. They are very endangered, and most of the breeders that are letting eggs or ducklings go are being a bit picky about where they end up, to make sure the people who get them are committed to the effort of restoring the breed.

Are these made by crossing mallerds and calls

Originally, yes. Now they are there own established breed with certain traits. Crossing a mallard and a Call won't get you an Aztec right off the bat.

Ok thanks that what I thought 👍

Yes I know I wouldn't get an Aztec right off the bat . Haha 🙂

Number 4 has entered the world. But it looks a bit darker than the others. So not really sure what is going on with it. I will see what it looks like when it is dry.

I have 8 more eggs that will hopefully hatch by sometime tomorrow. These four have hatched really fast for ducklings about 36-48 hours between internal pip yesterday and hatching today.
